Hip Hop Poll: Round 1, Poll L

Dre gets the slight edge over Kurtis Blow for me.

Janszoon 02-01-2011 07:27 AM

Dre, easily. I like his music far more than any of those guys and he's arguably the most influential of the bunch.

RandyMarsh 02-01-2011 07:36 AM

Dre, despite the fact he's never written a line in his life. He has a good flow and delivery and to be honest the rest of those acts are just "meh" at best.

Wait a second... you're voting Dre because of his rapping?

Over the others, yes. It's not much of a contest they're all terrible rappers and Dre doesn't even write his own lyrics but yet is still superior, that's just how bad the others are.

Besides this is a thread for deciding the best rapper right? Why else would I vote for him? "I vote dre 'cause I like his haircut?" gtfo.

These are greatest hip hop artist polls, not simply best rapper polls.

Um... how about because he's one of the greatest producers in the history of hip hop?

So rapping and producing? How many of the people nominated in these polls does both? You nominate a rapper I'll rate them on their rapping skill. Simple.

lol really? Surely that comes down to preference, there's no right or wrong with producing, just what you enjoy.

Again, it's "greatest hip hop artist" not "greatest rapper". You're supposed to rate the people nominated based on the whole creative package, not simply rapping ability.

In the case of Dr. Dre, he's known primarily as producer so it seems particularly odd to judge him solely based on his rapping ability.

Same with rapping. What's your point?

Phantom Limb 02-01-2011 10:05 AM

Raekwon all the way.

Not really fair to compare a rapper with a rapper AND producer. Either compare their rapping skills or don't compare. DJ Premier is a great producer but Kanye raps, sings and produces, it's not a fair comparison unless you compare them simply as producers. Same for Dre vs the other artists in the poll.

And personally I'd say he's better known for his record label and NWA days.

Not really. 50 cent is a bad rapper, not debatable. You can like bad rappers but they're still bad rappers. Producing is more of a preference thing, you say Dre, I say Nujabes. Two VERY different producers but there's no wrong. Rap is more technical, you have specific aspects, flow, delivery, lyricism etc. There's no such thing as a bad beat, just a beat you dislike. But there is such a thing as a bad rapper. There's a way to measure rap ability, based on effective use of lyricism and flow etc but there's no way to measure a good beat. That's my opinion on it anyway.

Who cares if it's fair? The poll is what it is.

You can say that all you want but doesn't change the fact that the vast majority of his creative output has been in the realm of producing.

LOL wut?

Phantom Limb 02-01-2011 10:16 AM

It doesn't matter because I'm fairly sure most people aren't judging based on technical ability. Vote for who you enjoy listening to most and it won't be a problem.

James 02-01-2011 10:16 AM

Slug.

Here I thought I'd be giving him a sympathy vote. Not the best technically, but pretty consistently good for over a decade.

Yeah, he isn't as good as Dre I guess but Dre will win anyway, I may as well vote for Slug. He's good.

Slug is also a good lyricist btw, look at this from Always Coming Back Home To You by Atmosphere.

"It was a 38, the poor man's machete
Held it in my hand, thinking damn man it's heavi-
er then expected, wedged it behind my belt buckle
Knowin that its evil, even thought that I could smell trouble
The extra strength felt weak,
But over there on the corner saw what I needed and proceeded to cross the street
Put the heat in the mail box to loose it
Figured that the post office knows whats best to do with it
Mosey down the road thinkin' bout the old
I use to roam this zone with two feet of snow
Right here, this use to be a record shop
I've gotten love, I've gotten drunk, I've gotten beat up in that parking lot
I've had my lake street pride for three decades
These alleyways, and these streetlights have seen my best days
Before I was a germ learnin how to misbehave,
All the way to the grave, south side is my resting place
Took a right on Lyndale I'm getting near
But then the road became empty and the people disappeared
The clowds ran away, opened up the sky
And one by one I watched every constellation die
And there I was frozen, standin in my backyard
Face to face, eye to eye, starin at the last star
I should've known, walked all the way home
To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone"

I really like those lyrics.

raekwon is the best rapper in what may be the greatest hip hop group to have ever existed, he easily gets the nod here. however, the justus league is a criminally underrated group from NC, and the music they've been putting out has been consistently excellent. they're a distant, but deserving, second.

James 02-01-2011 11:56 AM

I don't really like solo raekwon, although I love him with Wu. I mean, he did a song with Bieber!

Does that mean you like it since it's not solo? ;)

I have heard it. I didn't like it too much, I get a little pissed when people call it the best solo Wu album. GZA, ODB and Ghostface all offered much better....

ThePhanastasio 02-01-2011 12:46 PM

Voted Slug. Very underrated lyricist, spot on delivery.

How about OBFCL 2 then? I think it's probably the best solo Wu album.

Not heard the 2nd one. Maybe I will check it out.

Raekwon the Chef. I love Wu Tang and Rae is one of my favorite members. Just awesome flow and style to his rhymes, even though it's usually covered in a street slang that's tough to understand. I just really like Raekwon so I'm going with him

The production on Cuban Lynx II is the best of any Wu-Tang album hands down.

On a side note, I only just now got caught up to speed on this... Liquid Swords 2 out in 2011?!? Follow up to the best solo Wu album.
