Maybe it's because TFTO is boring, plodding and unmemorable, but Sadinista, while still bloated...is engaging rather than mind bogglingly dull.

But wait a minute, you don't like sci fi themes? DUDE. Hawkwind is one of your favorite bands. Hell, The Fall covered sci fi stuff a good deal. The Pixies too. And David Bowie. And Parliament/Funkadelic. And Alice Cooper. And Can. And Kraftwerk. And Judas Priest. And Flaming Lips. And Jimi Hendrix. And Iron Maiden. And Roxy Music. And Sonic Youth. And T Rex. And Joy Division. And The Orb. And Stereolab. And Elvis Costello. And UFO. All had sci fi themes. If you picked out every song with sci fi themes in your collection. There would be a lot of them. It's very far from just a prog thing. Granted just about every prog band has done at least one sci fi or fantasy themed song. As for the neo classical thing, fair enough. But aside from some of the prog metal, and some of ELP's stuff, I wouldn't classify a lot of prog as "neo classical rock". Oh yes, smashing album. ..... See what I did there? Hehe. Lamest pun EVER. |

Genesis being one of the exceptions, there is a lot of fantasy in their work. But I know you can't stand them, so whatever. And of course Hawkwind, who are probably the most sci fi band ever, let alone the most sci fi oriented prog band. And then there's Van Der Graaf Generator, Gong and Magma. Also very sci fi heavy bands. And Rush too I reckon. But c'mon. Flaming Lips did two sci fi themed albums, including Yoshimi, which you cited as your favorite album from them. P Funk made a lot of concept albums with sci fi themes. Pixies and Frank Black pretty much had an obsession with UFOs. David Bowie had been doing sci fi stuff for pretty much the majority of his 70s career. Iron Maiden did a lot of sci fi and fantasy stuff. And Black Sabbath have even Yes and Zep beat when it comes to fantasy oriented songs. |

I don't mind Van Der Graaf Generator, Gong and Magma
I guess it depends a lot on context. if I find the record boring then I notice it more & it begins to annoy me. That's pretty much what happened when I heard 2112. I didn't find the music engaging and because of that because the whole album is one concept it got in the way of things & made it more annoying. That's pretty much what i'm trying to get at.

I love sci fi and fantasy themes and it's one of the things that drew me to prog. I generally find those themes a lot more interesting than the typical rock music subject matter. I'm kinda burnt out on songs about sex, drugs and rock n roll, to tell you the truth. Zep, AC/DC, Van Halen and GnR being exceptions. |

What about songs about owning a pair of time travelling wings & accidentally damaging the course of history

these are some overated bands/singers that have probably gotten laid a hell of lot more times than I ever will:
1.talking heads( weirdness so contrived it makes me want to vomit, from that period in the late 70's and early 80's when singing like a mad scientist was considered edgy) 2. the doors television, van halen, brian eno,u2,daniel lanois, johnny cash, crosby stills and nash(but not young), xtc, pink floyd, elvis presley, the jam, morrisey, clapton,x, arcade fire, exploited, the weakerthans, Dr.Dre(a terrible rapper, the only reason the chronic is enjoyable is because of snoop dogg, and the soul/funk samples he had other people lift and repackage, in fact he serves more of an executive producer role in that he doesn't do jack) I read someone mention hawkwind, a terribly underated band.
