I'd agree to disagree about Elliott Smith being overrated - I think he has his cultesque fan base but not much more. I don't think how well regarded someone is, is subjective. It can be measured in terms of how well they're reviewed and liked by the general public (or record sales.) I really don't think Smith is particularly raved about in the former category and even acknowledged in the second.

It seems like you are having a conversation and not really listing overrated bands, but I will make a list anyway:

NIRVANA (by far....)
Guns n' Roses
Radiohead (I don't see the appeal. Really.)
Metallica (I HATE YOU)
Oasis
Pearl Jam
The Kinks

God, you can call pretty much anything overrated. It seems I just made a list of "bands I do not enjoy that everyone else seems to", excluding Nirvana and Gn'R.....

Simple, there are way better thrash bands out there than Slayer.

Honestly, The Beatles. I know I'm going to take a lot of flack for it. I know that they are a fairly good rock band and that a lot of rock since then was influenced by them, but I still don't find them to be as utterly amazing as a lot of people make them out to be.

Unrelenting... you'll get no flack from me.... I have always felt exactly the same way as you do with regards to the Beatles...

Hardly anybody lists things that are overrated by a few.. something doesn't have to be massively popular to be overrated!

And really, are these bands THAT overrated when 85% of the posts in here are expressing distaste for them?

Well, it's usually popular bands that will be posted, because everyone knows of them and are bombarded with how amazing they are by lots of people around them.

Metallica. Everyone I talk to think they are the greatest metal band ever. Bull****.
