I believe I posted about my previous ignorance on the matter in my last post. I also talked about my previous snobbery and unique opinion in my original post. Trust me, the stupidity is something of which I am well aware.

However, in answer to your question - the honesty of the situation was... I was a music snob in the worst fashion. When everyone hyped the Beatles my whole life, and I had merely heard their radio hits, I never gave them a chance. I didn't dislike their hits, of course, but I didn't think they deserved the "Best band evar" title. So that's how one comes to the "overrated" conclusion.

Also regardless of your taste in music it's pretty ignorant to dismiss the Beatles entire influence off seeing as their arguably the most influential band ever.

Haven't you been the one arguing that calling something
over or under rated is not objectifying taste? To me
calling a band the greatest ever is over rating them for
reasons that have nothing to do with taste.
I would accept your argument, Crowe, but let's say that
in the mid-90's Enya had become so popular that
after a while all popular music had a new-agey tint
and all of it was boring drivel. Now, if I said that
Enya is overrated because it's boring drivel would
you disagree with me on the basis that Enya is influential?

So instead of assuming, you are now putting forth a "what if" scenario? Why don't I pose a question that would make the only sensible answer agree with my argument?

Frankly, I thought you had just been messing with me this entire time with your backwards logic, as if somebody could take themselves seriously when writing all of that... your last post with this parallel Enya future is just the icing on the cake, and I'm afraid I can't even take you seriously anymore. It's like I'm trying to explain quantum physics to a five year old in this particular case.

I would say in response to the "I would accept your argument" bit that: "I would accept your arguments if they were based on anything concrete as opposed to these fantasy scenarios you seem to have a predilection for positing."

I can't even begin to reply to your reply to Crowquill - "I think that personal taste is arbitrary and has nothing to do with..." etc, etc. Like you have some omnipotent understanding of the motivations of every human being that has ever listened to music? I'm done here.

I actually think grateful dead, i got a CD and didnt like them at all, they like tried to combine slow rock with metal...

Sorry, but I'm totally lost with your description of Grateful Dead. I do admit to liking them a little bit, more in the 80's when I saw them twice. But I would agree that they are overrated - in the sense that Phish / Dave Matthews / Jack Johnson type of easy going wookie-rock would consider them consider god. In the larger context of rock music, they really don't get that much exposure - only their notoriety.

Nonetheless, I'm still totally confused with your description of them being a combination of slow rock & metal. A more apt description might be a couple of guys noodling out notes for hours while absolutely stoned. Or - a 5 hour guitar / drum solo on lithium.
