I think I once posted the Beatles in this thread. Let me say this... go... go listen to the entire discography. LISTEN to it, don't just HEAR it... discovering the Beatles in their entirety at the age of 21 was both life changing and crushing at the same time. Life changing because... honestly, go to my lastfm and look at what I've listened to for the past month and a half, I went from 2 Beatles listens to 2,000+. It was crushing because there are times in my life where certain Beatles songs would have helped me out, and I didn't get to listen to it because I thought it was cool to discount the Beatles. Forget your silly pride and your awesome unique opinion. If you think that the Beatles are overrated it only shows that you haven't really listened to the music. /end gushing.

I agree with that except i'd say start with Rubber Soul and go onward. The stuff before that really isn't that creative as much as I love it anyway it's basically just pop songs. But Revolver, Abbey Road, Magical Mystery Tour, etc are all incredible.

I believe the title of the thread is "most" overrated. I once thought that the Beatles were the most overrated band. Going in with that opinion, ready to dislike everything about the Beatles, I allowed myself to be enlightened - which is not easy for any music snob to do. I no longer think they are the most overrated band ever. You see my post as an attempt to objectify taste. I assume this is because you got butt hurt because you feel like I have insulted your personal ability to make your own opinion. I could be wrong about that, but that's what I'm gathering by you being a dick about the whole thing. My advice to go "listen" to the music is not to objectify tastes, but rather for one to set aside their ego - much like I had to do - before making a hasty conclusion. If you've already done that, congrats. I was merely relaying my own experience in the matter.

Agreed! However, you gotta realize that when the Beatles released their earlier stuff that was pretty damn new at the time, and they were damn good at what they did with their pop albums. We take it for granted now and look at it as pop, but really that collective whole of their first few albums defined to a generation what pop was, and subsequently set the standard for the rest of the pop industry as well as the standard for the Beatles themselves. They were pushed and pushed and pushed to create new sounds and look what we got out of that, eh?

aside your ego, however, but that if you did so you would necessarily like/appreciate The Beatles. Thus, you've necessarily objectified taste with The Beatles representing "good" music. |

Yeah, well I still wouldn't consider them one of the most overrated bands ever seeing as a good deal of the hype is deserved while you have other bands that get a bunch of hype and doesn't deserve any of it. I'd consider those bands more overrated than the Beatles because at least the Beatles deserve it.
