Opeth. Dream Theater. He's right. Talent really doesn't mean music is good. There are a lot of REAL punk bands who have no talent but goddamn do they have soul and that's all that matters and they're a lot better than a lot of stuff out there.

It does to some degree... Wheither it's musicianship, songwriting or even just plain showmanship... If you don't have any of these then I don't understand how anyone could say your music is good anyway.

Of course music needs talent. To write a good song, you have to have some degree of songwriting talent, whether it's a pop song or a 20 minute drone piece. I think some of you need to look up the definition of the word.
Of course, there are different types of talent, and I find most bands who place overt importance on technical talent boring as hell. But to do something good, you have to have some talent at what you're doing - whether that's playing some crazy ****ing guitar riff, or screaming into a microphone while rolling around on the stage floor. If you have NO talent, it's not happenin'. |

Talent is just a perspective... everyone is good at doing what it is they do, and whether that be good or bad is completely relative. so to say something does or does not have talent is completely meaningless. as far as musical talent, in the strictest possible sense of the term, is absolutely not required to make good music. someone just encountering an instrument for the first time in their life could make something absolutely beautiful. whether that means they're talented, whose to say, everyone will probably say something different and just spend all their time arguing about it.
