I'd recommend a Fender Squier, too, but if possible, I'd buy one from a brick & mortar store and if there's any way you could get an experienced bass player (not someone who works in the store) to try them out for you. The quality of them can be inconsistent. I have some very expensive basses, but I've got a Squier Precision that's one of my favorites . . . it's one I stumbled into in a guitar shop in Idaho one time.

It wouldn't have to be a Precision. The other Squier models are fine, too. Squiers will run you from just over $200 to about $400 now. I wouldn't be averse to buying one online, but it's better if you can have someone experienced try a few out for you.
