It's very easy to pick up the basics of the piano (enough to play the chords and sing along, as you would with a guitar). It is, however, one of the hardest instruments to master. That's probably where your dad is coming from.

"Keyboard" IS piano, and there really aren't any "piano-like options" that are easier.

Exactly.


No instrument is easy to master. Nothing is easy to master. If you want to play music, then pick the instrument that appeals to you the most. Commit to it, and be patient.
