Just got a saxophone, absolutely no experience.
Hey guys, I just got a saxophone for Christmas and needless to say even though I have zero in terms of knowledge on anything about the instrument I'm extremely eager to learn. I love how it's used within' Soul, Funk, & Jazz pieces. I was just here to see if anyone had any advice for an extreme newbie. I also gotta say I love the image the instrument can bring, it's extremely cool, smooth, you know. Thanks

Just blow into the damn thing.
Seriously though, it's difficult to describe how to do certain techniques and such, so that's really up to you. The best advice that I have is to practice and experiment with what you can do with the instrument often. Learn a few songs that you like, practice intervals that sound good to you, etc. Practice scales and all that if you're serious about the instrument. It really is a learning process that's specific to each person, in my experience. |
Alright, thanks for the advice. I plan on starting lessons seriously soon.

Also: breathing exercises. Don't underestimate the importance of breath.

Just get a good introductory book on amazon or a music store and practice scales. Additionally, you should get a separate book for jazz, including scales, improvisational techniques, and some jazz standards. Make sure you keep it clean, and try to take a lesson from someone worthwhile at least once a week.
What model is it? |

I can't give any advice here at all but it's nice to see Frownland supportive of an aspiring musician. I wonder if Micco hung up the sax or is now blowing his heart out in a funk band. |
