Lap Steel Guitar

I would just like to hear anything you guys know about lap steel guitar. I haven't found much on Google or YouTube. There are a few demo videos on YouTube, and not much worth reading online. I also didn't see too many offers when it came to buying one on Guitar Center's website, Musician's Friend, etc. So do any of you play? What can you tell me (history, development, notable players)? Aside from that, what's the difference between lap steel, and playing electric or acoustic guitar with a slide?
