There are plenty of resources online these days for free. No need to buy a book at all. Back in the day I bought "Guitar for Dummies" and it actually helped quite a bit. It taught me all the basic chords...but honestly you don't need that. Just go look up a few beginner's tutorials and learn all the key open chords. Once you can go from G to D or any other chord without any huge issues, you can probably move on to learning some actual songs.
First song I learned was kumbaya. Seriously. Now I can play most things I put my mind to. Just stick with it.
