Something For Nothing: Singers
Things you singers can do to improve your technique while you're not doing anything (Sitting on a bus; in the line for the DMV; waiting for a class to start; you get the picture.)
Exercise One: Belly breathing. Doing this in daily life will give you more control and more air to use while singing. A good concentration exercise while singing, but an easy exercise to habituate yourself for in daily life. Also super good for you. Inhale until you feel air headed to the bottom of your lungs. Let it fill your belly completely. Vizualize the air hitting the bottom of your belly and expanding, until you feel the air extending to your back and above your hips. You should feel pressure on your sides, under your lungs at the diaphagm and abdominal wall, but not to the point you feel pain. This should feel natural. To start off, I recommend lying down on a flat surface. |
