Well, if you want something that sounds right, you tune the drums to a frequency that works with the shells and their dimensions. There is a correct frequency, which is why correctly-tuned drums resonate a lot longer and cleaner, and don't sound like boxes or weird multi-toned, off-axis craziness. But whether the person in question enjoys whatever is, I guess, the point, depending on the circumstances.

Tuning them to what sounds best to them is a completely subjective item, but is definitely valid if they're just playing drums to hear themselves play.
