And theyr'e also one of the loudest "self-amplified" instruments. My old roomate owned a set and he would take keisurely walks through the neighborhood just playing his bagpipes. Yuo could hear him from two blocks away. Talk about some pissed off neighbors!

you have to have good lung capasity to play them but they still kick ass and they have stood the test of time lasting for centuries.

The strange thing about bagpipes is that they aren't typically in equal-temperament tuning (the tuning system that almost everything you'll ever listen to in Western music is in). So when you hear them in popular music, they're at least partially out of tune.
