World instrument

Hi! I got one instrument, and want to repair and tune it up properly. Anyone know what it really is, and where its form? Looks like bamboo empty inside with strings, quite hard and thick. Thanks for any comments.

I've talked to my professor and he says he doesn't know exactly what it is, but says it shares some characteristics with some East Asian instruments.
