I'm trying to learn fingerstyle percussive acoustic. I'm thinkin since I haven't played guitar before this, it'll come more easily than it would for someone set in their ways.
Gotta learn basic acoustic first though... thank god for knowing too many goddamn musicians.

One problem I have had with taking on so many instruments is divvying up practice time accordingly. There are some weeks where I maybe only play my bass or guitar once. |

I've been playing both guitar and drums quite a bit lately. When I have a full kit available (I usually just play the snare as that's what I own), it's a lot of fun. I also play any non brass instrument I can get my hands on. I can usually find a good style to play in, not to mention it's fun as **** when I'm relearning a new instrument.

Seeing as how you don't play guitar I'd say get a 5-string and the Hal Leonard Banjo Method Book 1. Most Guitar Centers will carry the Epiphone MB-100 banjo which is an open back, so it's not quite as loud and it has a far more mellow tone, but it sits on your lap comfortably and is incredibly light. That's pretty much the entry tier in terms of cost and is generally pretty good. Make sure you get someone at the store to set up the bridge for you and get it in tune. If you can get National thumb picks, get them. I use a medium and they fit just fine and aren't as long as the Dunlop brand ones. |
