It just happens to be that none of us take the elitist BS that some people want to play here. |

Wow. My sincerest apologies, I think you just misjudged my post. Never did I say that people who couldn't read music and know the fundamentals are bad players, I said I personally don't consider them musicians. Too many a time you find some dude who can play a simple two and four rock beat on a set or a few different chords on a guitar and they call themselves musicians. I don't find that true. Doesn't mean I'm gonig to condemn them for picking up the instrument and having a great time, though. A percussionist, by the way, is somebody who is able to properly play avariey of percussion instruments, like keyboards, battery, and auxiliary. A drummer is a drummer, they can play a drum. That wasn't elitism, just an opinion. Does that get my point across better? |

If he misjudged your post, so did the five people who replied to your post in the last two pages.
Have a look. |

But drummers are musicians, even if their music is somewhat easier than other instruments, although this isn't always the case. |

Who cares about should learn? I got a flute, does that mean I aspire to be the next Ian Anderson? Or gain proficiency with every other woodwind out there? No, I would love to be able to play it with confidence and that's what I'm going for. I play every instrument up there (not exactly a big list) although skill levels vary. I like to play instruments because I think it's fun. When I was a teenager and picked up the drums for example, I had a blast with it and learned quickly.
I'd actually rather be able to play a lot of instruments than being a virtuoso with one. But that's because to reach that kind of level, you have to leave the fun behind more and more often and I just don't have the discipline.

And why does Keyboard suck? Piano was definitely the hardest instrument for me personally to learn and become good at...
I'm with tore. Since when did playing music mean aspiring to conquer every single genre, style and technique out there? Learning instruments for me is about enjoyment and personal growth, not trying to be every single different virtuoso out there. Anyway, I 'play' all instruments that are listed up there apart from drums. I could never, ever get into drums for some reason. I was dragged along to classical piano lessons when I was a child, I then started picking up a guitar when I was a teenager and now I'm venturing into bass - which is definitely my favourite instrument to play! I also 'play' my vocal chords but have no formal training, unless you count singing in the shower and in my car I'm not that great but I enjoy what I do and that is all that matters! |

Most of us by far don't work as musicians. I mean it's one thing if that's your bread and water, then you can perhaps start writing about what people in your situation should know. But then you're also in a minority here and should keep in mind that with a general post in this thread, you're addressing the majority.

Look at my post later in this thread: Quote:
I have absolutely no problem with someone being fluent in one instrument and not the entire family, I'm down with that. I personally know a freshman in my percussion section that thinks he's the coolest kid ever and he can barely keep a steady set of eighths. But he's having fun, and since music is for everyone, then he's automatically in the musician category, right? My bad, I forgot that I'm not allowed to have an opinion about who I consider a musician. Quote:
Again, had you given me the benefit of the doubt, you would've known I'm not confident about my music skill in the slightest, and I was talking about simple people who think they're studly because of the volume and speed they can play a drum, for example, without knowing how to read music or feel the beat, or even hold the stick, or even how adjust a music stand. But all noobs are arrogant fools, aren't they? Yes, I know how hard set is to play, which is why... *GASP* (Is he really gonna say it?!) I can't play anything complex on a drum set. Hell, I can hardly play mallets, I have to write the notes in and practice a lot before I get the hang of it. Very pretentious to outright admit I haven't mastered two very important parts of percussion, isn't it? Also, please tell me where I said I was the best ever in world history at playing drums. I don't remember that part of the conversation, either. Quote:
--------------------------------------------------- I'm willing to restart this whole thing if we can all just back off what you thought I said. I honestly apologize if you misjudged it, but I assure you it wasn't meant to sound so arrogant as you might've assumed. |

Why does it say keyboard sucks???
I play all the above reasonably proficiently, but I am most comfortable on guitar and piano. I also play accordion, organs, synths, ukulele, mandolin, banjo and I'm struggling along with flugel horn and trumpet but with only minimal success.
