And every time I confess this dismay to someone, they say "oh well you can just move it up the neck" as if someone who Youtubes his guitar lessons would know what that is.

I tried figuring that out once, but between the b-string ruining everything, and the half-steps I just don't know if I can do it on my own.

Is anyone else this helplessly hopeless when it comes to the axe?
Many people have multiple guitars tuned differently so that they dont have to bother with this each time. Personally I keep my main axe in standard and my humbucking guitar with h10 gauge strings downtuned to D. It makes my life that much easier.
