Who thinks that it's extremly achievable for one to teach themselves trumpet?

It's just an idle question, honestly. I just want to see what y'all think.

EDIT: Without the use of a teacher, such that you could find on youtube. Books are OK.

ANY THING, IS POSSIBLE, IF YOU TRY HARD ENOUGH!!!!!!!!

cue motivational music here.

I voted "Yes"
There are a lot of resources out there, anything from Youtube, to teach basic, to Mel Bay where you can obtain CDs Books and Videos, I sure you can find a pedagogical method for the trumpet anywhere online - that is enough to get you started, and with a lot of hard practice you could work you way up to intermediate level, but if you want to be an advance trumpet player like say a Jazz trumpet player I would recommend getting a teacher after you get the basic down - nothing's worse then shelling out major bucks for a half hour lesson as a beginner just to learn like three notes.

It depends how much drive you have and how good your grasp on music theory is... I'm super lazy so I might not ever learn to play/purchase a trumpet.

Well, anyone with an internet connection can easily find teachers these days. There are lots of them on youtube for example.

Ive seen self taught musicians in tons of instruments... I dont know why a Trumpet would be any different. I always like seeing people who a self taught because they seem to be a relaxed and dont have so many rules while playing.

Who thinks that it's extremly achievable for one to teach themselves trumpet?

me!

3. If you're listening to music right now, you should probably thank a music teacher]

WTF! i take it YOU'RE a teacher

my question is ( if your logic is correct ) who taught the first person to play trumpet?

P A N 02-14-2010 09:28 AM

i think it's totally achievable. obviously there are definite advantages to having a teacher. but i also think that music is a pretty subjective thing, and if i like what's coming out the end of my trumpet, then technically i can play the trumpet.

but to become a successful self-taught trumpet player, as in one that generates enough income to survive via the playing of his trumpet, you would need to have a pretty hermetic approach at learning.

The only thing that's stopping anyone is a lack of genuine desire. I usually try to ask people what their actual goal is.

Often times they'll say things like "well I really want to be an actor, or the best guitar player ever." But whats most true is that they want to be famous (and acting is a vehicle for that) or they want to **** lots of women.

If someone actually wants to do something, practice doesn't feel like labor. And when you can practice for hours, few things, if anything, is actually impossible.

Arya Stark 02-14-2010 10:59 AM

I'm sure it's been done before, BT.
Because you're a teacher and because you play trumpet, doesn't mean people can't do it on their own.

Petula07 02-14-2010 11:39 AM

I voted "don't know" because I am not sure if it is extremly achievable. Not extremly but yes, with some effort almost everything is possible :)
Probably there are easier instruments than trumpet. I tried some instruments which I don't play (violin, violoncello, clarinet, guitar, drums, trumpet) and trumpet was FOR ME really hard. Harder than guitar or clarinet. I guess it's also harder than to play a flute (that I play).
But everybody is different so...

Bandteacher, I see your signature "If you're listening to music right now, you should probably thank a music teacher."
I would add to this sentence it depends a lot WHO is this teacher. I had some teachers in school for music lessons, some in music school and there were very big differences. I play a flute and it is my big hobby because my first teacher was very very good. Every lesson was pleasure and free time with many emotions. On the other hand I tried to play piano but my teacher was soooo boring that I lost my interest to play this instrument.

And listening to music is matter of taste or personality. No teacher influenced my musical taste, it was only me and people around me, no teachers. Somebody listen to what they can find on radio or MTV and they don't need more. Some people search to find new music because they are curious and they want to know more and not only something what TV sais that it is good music.

Maybe in other countries it's different, I am not sure. But in czech schools, teachers talk only about classical music, little bit about jazz but nothing more. Other genres don't exist in czech school lessons and that's why influence of teacher is really really small. Students are more into another music than classical music and they often ignore talking about classical music. That's sad but on the other had I think we would need some new way how to make music lessons better and more interesting for teenagers.

I think with enough studying/time/motivation/determination any instrument could be self taught.

mr dave 02-16-2010 01:31 AM

'extremely' achievable? don't think so.

achievable through determination and practice? absolutely.

Blue: No really, what gave it away? Perhaps bandteacher1 was a clue? Not to mentoin the fact that I didn't write it. I just quoted it.

And guys, I said self thought, which I meant without a teacher. Perhaps I should have stated that.

Blue2: What logic??? I said it was an idle point, that I wanted opinions.

OceanAndSilence 02-22-2010 11:44 PM

you can be self taught, albeit it being a slow and perhaps incorrect curve.
