How do I connect a guitar to my PC?

This is maybe a dumb question, but I'm not really a guitar player, so I wouldn't know. Anyway, I want to connect a guitar to my PC so I could use Amplitube XGear instead of a real amp. I tried connecting it through a preamp and Line in, but Amplitube just couldn't recognize it. Then I connected it through mic in, but Amplitube still couldn't recognize it. So, does anyone use a guitar with Amplitube who could help me with this?

get yourself a guitarport...go to musiciansfriend.com they have them there cheap and they are pretty solid for what they are.

i use m-audio black box

this is a stand alone guitar amp simulator with in built drum beats and beat sync fx
mic input etc
but where it really comes alive is when you connect it to pc via USB then it becomes
an outboard souncard and guitar, mic recording interface with no latency using ASIO
drivers.
i use it for amplitube and it works great.

You can plug your amp into the computer's mic port.
Edit: oops - I see you've already tried that

you don't wanna plug any instrument or mic directly into your computer unless you have a soundcard with 1/4inch inputs installed. why? because those wee ones that come standard with a pc are just too damn small and result in crap audio.
