How To Growl on the Trumpet
Ok, any trumpeters correct me if I get this wrong.
I decided to start this thread due the memory of learning having a hard to time learn how to "growl" on the trumpet. In high school I used to sit down and listen to jazz, blues, and some audiobooks of music technique on my headphones. I was always astounded how the jazz trumpeters could produce such a fun, rowdy, and awesome growling noise. I really learned until I actually tried. After much practice I learned, Here is how I do it. For me, there are a few different kinds of growls. 1. Throat growl, kinda like that "sexy tiger" thing people do using the dangly in the back of your throat to make the growl. "Grrrllrrlllrwar." (notice the l's because the tongue is placed as if you will say an "L" sound) 2. The one I learned first was the mexican dancer growl. To do this growl, think of the mexican dancers who yell "ARRRIBBA!!" With the fluttering tongue. Flutter tongue into the mouth piece just like this, with an "O" shaped mouth. With plenty of air, it should produce a growling noise. This teqnique is great to know in many blues and jazz situations. People love it in solos and ensembles as well. Have fun with it! |
