as for your comment about shining the finish as opposed to wearing it out, i think that's a matter of new technology being applied to instrument finishes. now we have multiple layers of lacquer and paint and primer to wear through before we get to the wood. wouldn't be surprised if some of those layers are made to resist sweat as well.

the only time i see modern instruments worn down to the wood are by owners who wear lots of jewelry.

M old Fender MusicMaster had a finger rest. It actually comes in handy with the fUnK.
