I'm a big fan of the slap n pop, which I simply cannot do on more than a four string

yeah it's a cheap way to get 'really' heavy. like how dropped-D tuning changed the way power chords were played for a while in the 90s.

i like my B string because it allows me to drop melodies or patterns by simply moving down a string instead of having to move down the neck. i'm lazy. haha

in all honesty, if you look at Colin's other projects, like Dysrhytmia, it's basically his vision of music being played out. while it may seem hard to believe, they plan out every note, every key change, with insane precision and accuracy

i think the real question here is active or passive pickups. that has a definite impact upon the sound a bass guitar produces.
I used to be totally against active electronics after the first time I played a show with an active bass and the battery died half way through the set, and I had no idea what the hell had happened to my sound?! But just after educating myself on the situation, I primarily play active now. My Schecter Stilleto Custom 5 is my main bass and its active, as is my main 4 string, a Cort.

if you want more notes, go for the 4 strings. They are really the same except for the added notes as the number of strings go up. Also, if your fingers are adjusted already (if you're a pro), you can have the 5 strings
