My Precious Guitar... Raped
Are you afraid when somebody who doesn't know how to play guitar, wants to play your guitar badly, and he just does something weird with it that looks harmful, or he tries this 'slap' he's seen bass players doing, and just seems like he's f'ing with your strings???
Or something similar... A friend of mine did everything above and I was just about to say, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! STOP!!!!!! Tell us your thoughts.:afro: |

the issue is pretty much covered from every angle in this thread. just from your choice of words i'd say you're overreacting. it LOOKS harmful, or SEEMS like the strings are being effed. yet nothing is actually harmed or screwed up, because if it was it would / should have been addressed at the moment. if they're trying to slap and a string pops then it pretty much needs to be addressed at the moment, otherwise the ONLY bad thing that would result from slapping is going out of tune (unless they have a big spiky bracelet and its being slammed into the body as well) TL/DR version: relax, it's a guitar it's made to be rocked out on. |
It's like when my girlfriend wants to learn how to play and I see her grabbing the strings between her fingers and pulling them hard. I'm like "hehehhh see here, sweetie .. strum softly - like this". "Okay - BWANG! BWRANG!"
I know how you feel. |
Yeah, it gets me really angsty when people f around with my guitar when they clearly don't know how to play. One, because I don't want it to get damaged, and two, because I love my guitar very much and I hate hearing it sound like it is being raped.

i play my guitar with my penis
|
^^ 12 string guitar and plucks each individual string with accuracy
|
I used to have this little classical guitar, nothing fancy, but I really enjoyed playing it. One of my sisters friends come over to hang out with them one day and I let him play my guitar for a bit (i watched him carefully) and then made him put it down when i had to leave. When I came back he came running up proudly holding the guitar and said "dude I pimped your guitar! its so cool now!" he put stickers all over the body! 0.0 i still cant get one of them off all the way :( I was beyond pissed.
|
The strap on my bass guitar carrier gave out so I dropped it by accident. :( Now I have I small crack and dent on the bottom on it. Not noticeable, but still sad. I don't plan on reselling but still...
|
You could just tell people to leave your guitar alone or get the **** out of your house. It seems to work for my husband.
I wonder why no one wants to come by anymore??? |

well.. from my experience, id gotta to say that in general most guitarists are really uptight about this sort of thing. a good number of my friends play guitar and they bitch excessively whenever i fiddle with it.
unless your friend fiddling with your guitar is stupid or has been known to break lots of stuff, then i wouldnt worry about it that much. the strings are made of steel you know :p. but i can totally understand why youd be protective though. a guitar is expensive. one time i did rape my friends guitar though. i leaned it against an amp and it fell on the pavement. :D |
Seriously, has anyone heard of Sonic Youth? They **** up their guitars and still sound good.
|
sonic youth also collected their guitars at pawn shops at a time when their models of choice were basically being given away.
it's a lot easier on your conscience to make a homemade 3rd bridge guitar with something you picked up for $150 rather than $1500. |
I thought that Lee and Thurston just played behind the bridge of a jazzmaster to get the sound of chiming bells.
|
depends on the tune. the chiming bell effect isn't going to hurt anything. the 3rd bridge setup is usually created by shoving a screwdriver or butter knife between the strings and the fretboard around the lower frets.

I hated it when a kid I jammed with (great guitarist) would bang the body here and there when changing amp settings and stuff. I told him to stop repeatedly, but he would still do it occasionally.
As long as whoever plays my guitar cares for it, I'm fine with them playing it, but I never hand it out blindly. I'd stow it away or tell people not to bother with it (if they ask why I usually just say something's wrong with it and it needs fixing). |
My brother bought a ****ty guitar just for other ppl to play so they won't touch his Strat...I play the drums...I have a Pearl Export series drum set with Sabian series B cymbals and I let ppl just bang away on them...Well, if by ppl I mean hot chicks:-)
|
Damn friends always pickin up my guitar and throwin it around, its a Damn les paul have some ****ing respect for it, they throw it on the bed and the knobs are going flat and it messes up the tuning and AAHHHH it pisses me off.

One of my guitars was brutally raped by a friend of mine a few years back.. She was acting like a dumbass, tripped, knocked it over, and then fell on top of it.. snapping the head off. I promptly grabbed her skateboard and smashed it. I managed to fix the guitar but it doesn't play quite the same. Wasn't an amazing guitar anyways but damn.. show some respect.
|
I dented the bottom of my bass, and it gave out a more higher pitched, echoey tone which is awesome. It only cost 130 dollars so I am not crazy about maintain it in pristine condition.

I remember somewhere that this band had modded telecasters where they drilled holes and **** in them. I just can't do that with my guitars, maybe a squire though.
|
It was 100% accident sorry for not making that clear. The strap to the case gave out while I was carrying it. The dent is right next to the input jack (might be why my jack is having problems). It's diameter is a twice the size of a nickel's and it's a little less than half of an inch.
|
i figured it was an accident hehe, not many people dent their instruments purposefully. i wonder if the change in tone isn't due to the input jack problems you're having. might be a short in a connection that hasn't really split yet.
|
Hehe... Kidding... I edited it out, but really felt like posting it.
