Question I have a general/maybe advanced question...

Hello, I'm very new to this whole 'forum' thing, but I thought I could post here...

I have a question regarding microphones and their sound or their "pick-up" style... I'm not sure how to word it.

Is there some type of setting that is used for a different type of voice? For example when singing live, has anyone ever heard Lifehouse sing? The singer has the type of voice that uses a lot of wind (or air) even when singing in a low volume. Versus bands where the singer is screaming his lungs out or where the singer's voice is really thin. Are there different microphones or microphone settings for that, or is it just a matter of volume? What about feedback though?

I'm asking because I've started singing and I noticed I have a tendency to sing with a lot of 'wind' also, and if I were to start singing live at an open mic place or whatever I want to make sure the right setting is used.

Sorry if this is at all confusing.

Hi, Im not really an expert but wouldnt it be something to do with the EQ used in the mixing desk rather than the type of mic? Im sure the type of mic has a part to play but i think it has more to do with the EQ and how far away you sing from the mic..

the type of microphone and its pickup would be factors. generally speaking most vocalists use unidirectional mics, depending on your style and normal performance setting a high end condenser mic might work as well.

shure is pretty much the industry standard when it comes to microphones. Shure - Professional Audio - Products

EQ, mixing, distance from mic, vocal effects (reverb / echo) are all going to be significant factors in your overall sound as well.

Right! I completely overlooked the EQ mixing part of it...

Thanks!
