12 string electric guitars. Help?

Well I was at a gig last night and I have been inspired to get a 12 string electric guitar, anyone know any good, affordable models?

lucifer_sam 11-07-2008 03:57 PM

Only electric ones I've seen are on a double-necked guitar and it doesn't really make sense buying one unless you can pull off the whole Jimmy Page thing.

Just a question, but isn't the purpose of a twelve string to boost the range of the rhythm section? There really isn't any merit to playing lead guitar on a 12-string.

FireInCairo 11-08-2008 05:16 AM

ahhhh but it would be mighty interesting
that is like saying bass is only there to fill out the sound, true in most cases, but not all.
Ive seen a few
I thinkill have to save for the rickenbacher

mr dave 11-08-2008 03:08 PM

the rickenbacher's are pretty much 'the' electric 12 string as far as i know, but they're going to cost you. fender does offer a 12 string strat also. PRS and gretsch also have electric 12s but they're well over 2 grand a piece according to musiciansfriend.com

as far as the merits of a 12 string go there's no reason you can't play lead on them. you can't really play blues based leads since bending strings becomes a big hassle but you can most definitely take advantage of the natural chorus sound of the instrument for other types of lead passages.

FireInCairo 11-08-2008 08:30 PM

Im not going to be playing much blues based stuff, post punk you know
more droney stuff.
I found a danelectro one, A DC 12 string
they about 600 i think so not too bad
need to find one in australia though....

I suppose so, but I always play lead by feel, not by actually tooling the axe. I feel that the wider neck/octave strings would throw me off, but hey, that's just me. It would be kind of cool to hear the bigger range you could pull off with a 12-string.

Seltzer 11-08-2008 10:14 PM

This thread makes me want to listen to the Byrds. :p:

mrmusicguru 11-10-2008 04:41 PM

Affordable 12-strings are a bit hard to come by, as they should... they are beautiful sound, however it depends really on what you mean by 'affordable'? I ahve seen some decent Gibsons through large outlets like Guitar Center for $600... that's honestly a good deal.

Hate to digress from this post, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a great place to get a used ACOUSTIC 12-string?

I had a real junker that finally had to be put down last month... and really could use a used one for less than $100. It's a stretch, but I'm hoping to find something... I need to finish my album ASAP.

I know ebay has a ton, but wasn't sure if some other site had better pricing... I just can't fathom spending $1ْْْxx for a beater on ebay.

turboduck17 11-10-2008 07:13 PM

get a doubleneck sg.

and if you dont ave enough for the gibson version, get the epiphone version doubleneck. its 500-600 dollas

FireInCairo 11-10-2008 11:00 PM

I dont like SGs and i like double necked guitars even less
they give me zeppelin cringe

in going to get the danelectro Dc 12

mr dave 11-11-2008 03:00 AM

nice. looks like a fine choice, what finish are you shooting to get?

let us know how it turns out

(the only thing that makes me cringe more than a led zep double neck is a home made double neck haha)

FireInCairo 11-11-2008 03:08 AM

ugh that sounds so bad!

Im thinking either the black (to fit in with my other guitars) or the cherry red
need to figure out the finance though

mrmusicguru 11-11-2008 10:05 AM

cherry red is an great finish, but I haven't seen much black finished on 12-strings? ...or is that just me?

turboduck17 11-11-2008 03:53 PM

no its not just u i agree.

ive seen like 1 black twelvie in my entire life

Nah. A guy on the megadeth forums took two of these Douglas Fulcrum Black at HomeOld

and bolted them together to make a double neck 6 string/10 string V

It looked pretty sweet. He took em down to the bare wood and tung oiled them and it was ****ing cool looking.

Astronomer 11-12-2008 12:41 AM

Cherry red! And you have to show us the finished choice when you get the finances sorted. Sweet.

FireInCairo 11-12-2008 12:43 AM

hahaha I will but it may take a fair while (im currently heavily in debt due to current guitar repairs, pyramid festival tickets, a tram fine and schoolies accomodation) and of course I have no job as a student/writer/musician haha.

GuitarBizarre 11-12-2008 12:57 AM

I'd avoid the danelectro tbh. The bodies are made of masonite and plywood...

Fender make a Stratocaster XII though, and if anyone knows 12 string electric jangle its gonna be them.

And schecter make the stargazer 12 and SCH12 (The SCH12 is semi hollow btw, it'd be my choice if I were going for a 12 electric. Semi hollow electrics sound SWEET and 12 strings are awesome...combine the 2 and I'm guassing things get wicked.)

(I'd link to their normal website, but my computer won't access it for some reason. Google schecter guitar research)

Just, imo, danelectro aren't going to be the best guitars for the money...they have a lot of kitsch value, but at the end of the day, they're still made of plywood, and the pickups still can't be adjusted for different heights

You're going to Pyramid? I am so, so jealous. I almost, ALMOST got tickets but then a work commitment over the summer stopped me. Gah! *more jealousy*

FireInCairo 11-12-2008 02:22 AM

Haha yeah Im going with a big group of friends, should be sweet
I missed out on meredith and golden plains though and there is no way i can afford nevereverland and BDo tickets as well.

TO guitarbizzare
I have a bit of an affinity for ****ty guitars that have loads of eccentricities....and strat styles make me want to die.
But thanks for the heads up anyway!!!!!

Ugh...your choice I guess... Personally I have an affinity for guitars so ridiculously versatile and well made they make swiss watches look cobbled together...

FireInCairo 11-12-2008 02:48 AM

each to his own.

GuitarBizarre 11-12-2008 03:13 AM

This is true.

Hell, my dream guitar is a Piezo ZR7/Piezo Floyd equipped RG with individual killswitchs and coil taps for each pickup, a piezo to midi system installed, (switchable so i can still access piezo tones) including a stacked bucker in the middle! And possibly even a full set of locking, transposing tuners, so I can set them up that I flip all of them, and then strings 1-5 change in tension just enough to put me into perfect dropped D without the other strings going out of tune!

Or, in other words - THE MOAR OPTIONS IN ONE GUITAR = The moar Guitarbizarre gets happy in the pants

FireInCairo 11-12-2008 03:17 AM

my currently possessed custom maton ms500 has long been my favourite, 2 mastertone active humbuckers a three way switch and a super short scale neck.
Im a pedals man mainly anyway.

ktrip 11-12-2008 04:27 PM

To get back to the 12-strings, I would highly reccomend the schecter. I was fortunate to have gotten one for 400 used last year. It was a steal, as it was in perfect condition, and it came with the B.C. Rich case. The guitar sounds like a chrous of angels on clean, but gets dirty nice. As far as soloing, its a little harder, but not impossible, and can give you some effects you can't get on a 6-string. Two things though..... the electronics will need to be replaced because they can be tempermental, and it's not a regular allen wrench to adjust the truss rod, which I don't have, so my neck is like a banana

GuitarBizarre 11-12-2008 05:51 PM

most truss rods use truss wrenches. you can buy them from stewmac or in a pinch you can use a socket.

a 12 string is the same as a 6 string only the standard strings are doubled with octave strings. it's not an extra 6 strings like the current trend of adding more strings to metal guitars (like the 8 string models that seem to be popping up a lot more frequently).

besides it's not like the attached pictures in this thread made it hard to see what a 12 string really is.

if i remember right BC Rich also offered a 10 string model that only doubled the top 4 strings. personally i'm not a huge fan of their pointy guitar style though.

turboduck17 11-13-2008 09:20 PM

I love bc rich guitars, they play nice, and their shape is brootal

FireInCairo 11-13-2008 09:21 PM

relevant how?

turboduck17 11-13-2008 09:26 PM

the talk got into 10 string and then 10 string Bich's

i love bichs they are nice guitars, only the higher end ones tho

FireInCairo 11-13-2008 09:28 PM

they are still kind of tacky....

turboduck17 11-13-2008 09:31 PM

not the custom ones

FireInCairo 11-13-2008 09:32 PM

....no still tacky
pointy guitars just make you look like a douchebag

turboduck17 11-13-2008 09:34 PM

no, they look non metal bands look lke a douch bag

i have a dean Z :]

FireInCairo 11-13-2008 09:45 PM

the gibson style 'Vs' and 'explorers' look ok (the dean z is explorer type isnt it?) and were around long before metal had been conceptualised and do not really look ridiculous in any context (maybe jazz and classical)
...but the bc rich beast, bich, warlock, Dean Dime etc look utterly ridiculous, and since most metal bands look ridiculous in the penchant for conformist cliches in terms of clothes, equipment and hairstyles, (and many modern examples also exemplify this in their music) it seems to match completely.

mr dave 11-14-2008 12:52 PM

for someone who pulled out 'to each their own' earlier in this thread you don't seem to intent on letting things slide smoothly :p:

funny enough the only 2 people i remember seeing using 10 string BC rich guitars were the dude from danzig and one of the guys from the P-funk.

personally i really like the fact that pointy guitars are coming back in style. i work with a guy who loves BC Rich guitars and plays a mockingbird bass. they look gaudy to my eyes but i just grin and nod since it means there's one less pair of hands trying to pick up some funky jazzmaster looking thing from the wall if i decide to pick something up.

and to bring this full circle. as nice as the schecter looks in that pic i'd probably still go for the danelectro. i like their unique character. the 12 string strat does nothing for me.

FireInCairo 11-14-2008 02:42 PM

hahaha yes i suppose I contradicted myself there
Too many loser hardcore and metal guys who can't really play around my town I guess...

turboduck17 11-14-2008 08:22 PM

just stop dissing metal.

i could diss ur music if youdlike :]

FireInCairo 11-14-2008 10:34 PM

I wasn't dissing metal....I like metal...I was dissing the bull**** stereotype most metal fans subscribe to.
