12 string electric guitars. Help?
 

Well I was at a gig last night and I have been inspired to get a 12 string electric guitar, anyone know any good, affordable models?

Only electric ones I've seen are on a double-necked guitar and it doesn't really make sense buying one unless you can pull off the whole Jimmy Page thing.

Just a question, but isn't the purpose of a twelve string to boost the range of the rhythm section? There really isn't any merit to playing lead guitar on a 12-string.

that is like saying bass is only there to fill out the sound, true in most cases, but not all.

the rickenbacher's are pretty much 'the' electric 12 string as far as i know, but they're going to cost you. fender does offer a 12 string strat also. PRS and gretsch also have electric 12s but they're well over 2 grand a piece according to musiciansfriend.com

as far as the merits of a 12 string go there's no reason you can't play lead on them. you can't really play blues based leads since bending strings becomes a big hassle but you can most definitely take advantage of the natural chorus sound of the instrument for other types of lead passages.

I suppose so, but I always play lead by feel, not by actually tooling the axe. I feel that the wider neck/octave strings would throw me off, but hey, that's just me. It would be kind of cool to hear the bigger range you could pull off with a 12-string.

Affordable 12-strings are a bit hard to come by, as they should... they are beautiful sound, however it depends really on what you mean by 'affordable'? I ahve seen some decent Gibsons through large outlets like Guitar Center for $600... that's honestly a good deal.

Hate to digress from this post, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a great place to get a used ACOUSTIC 12-string?

I had a real junker that finally had to be put down last month... and really could use a used one for less than $100. It's a stretch, but I'm hoping to find something... I need to finish my album ASAP.

I know ebay has a ton, but wasn't sure if some other site had better pricing... I just can't fathom spending $1ْْْxx for a beater on ebay.

and if you dont ave enough for the gibson version, get the epiphone version doubleneck. its 500-600 dollas
