i would say stop playing other people's shit, but you can't learn originality.

there is no merit in mindlessly churning out something that someone else wrote.

unless you're playing in a cover band.

I've been encountering a few technical problems of my own, but they're completely unrelated to stylistic approach...

Can you play the 8 minute solo of Freebird?

Also look up buckethead riffs, and work with alternate styles of picking, my friend ( and probly the best guitarist I know) spent a while mastering the art of chickenpicken(spelling?), which is quite something to watch hehe.

Also you could try the Hendrix act of playing while tuning your guitar, im sure that could come in handy haha.

But it's enjoyable, self-satisfying to learn something, and also good practice.

I find a lot of Tool songs quite challenging myself.

One, it is spelled Voodoo Chile, not Voodo CHild.

Two, the OP was totally right. Awesome, congrats on learning Voodoo Chile, it shouldn't be too hard if you've been playing for 22 months but still, it's a decently challenging piece. But in the end, is it really that impressive playing other people's crap? The music one writes displays musical talent, not just being able to mimic someone else.

keep in mind there's a difference between being a musician and being a guitarist.

there's nothing wrong with focusing on covers. i did it for about 5 years before i started playing with other people. it's a good way to develop technical chops.

as for being impressive, it can be. think of it like this, anyone can start a band and get a few shows. on the other hand, a cover band that wants to play gigs has to be able to convince a crowd that they're at least a halfway decent version of the real thing. are symphony musicians inferior because the majority of their time is spent playing other peoples music?

as for voodoo chile, it was about the 2 year mark for me as well hehe

as for more tunes (tabs shouldn't be hard to find)

jane's addiction - three days
led zeppelin - achilles last stand
eric johnson - cliffs of dover
king crimson - 21st century schizoid man

I find a lot of videogame music is very challenging. Try some of the F-Zero songs, tetris theme, and the final fantasy 7 battle music or boss music.

The black mages do a lot of cool stuff too, check them out.
