Skill testing songs
Ok I have been playing guitar for almost 2 years now and it is getting really hard for me to find new stuff to play thats at my level and will improve my playing... any suggestions?
Here is some of the harder songs that I can play all of Master of Puppets The Ocean Black Bird Seek and Destroy Another Brick In The Wall PT2 Stack Shot Billy Over the hills and far away Mario Theme I can tap fast and can tap some complex stuff... and I have some skills in sweeping Also based on all of that hoow good am I doing for 2 years on the guitar? |
you could always try going one step above what you already have
instead of metallica learn some slayer or meshuggah either way playing music is not a sport |

Don't get too rapped up in the technique...
I did, and then you realise...no one cares except shred heads...and they are the worst people write some songs. |
alright thanks everyone and I have been writting my own stuff mainly small riffs and not to much straight from my head mostly just stuff i stubbled upon

Hey, Do you play with a band? Metronome?
I think a big part of guitar playing is not haw fast you can shred or your amazing tapping skills...within a solo the important part is the notes you hit and how the notes fit or dont fit into the scales/keys you are playing in.. i think that if you want to improve, and your technique sounds like its quite good for two years of playing you should try learning the modes...dorian, lydian etc and some different scales and then try focus on the sound of the notes you hit..get some weird notes in there and make your solos sound great! note wise...not just speed wise... Know what i mean? I think a lot can be said for experience playing in a band.. Ive been playing for around 8 years now...my technique hasnt gotten that much better than my first 3 or 4 years but I play with a band every week..and my skills have increased out of sight!!.. Thats my thoughts..hope they help.. |
I'd say you're progressing at a pretty normal speed, you're fine.
If you don't already have all of the modes/pentatonic scales down, practice them until you are comfortable with them all. Then grab some sort of recording device, record a chord progression, and try improvising some soloing. |
i would say stop playing other people's shit, but you can't learn originality.
there is no merit in mindlessly churning out something that someone else wrote. |

I've been encountering a few technical problems of my own, but they're completely unrelated to stylistic approach...

Can you play the 8 minute solo of Freebird?
Also look up buckethead riffs, and work with alternate styles of picking, my friend ( and probly the best guitarist I know) spent a while mastering the art of chickenpicken(spelling?), which is quite something to watch hehe. Also you could try the Hendrix act of playing while tuning your guitar, im sure that could come in handy haha. |

I find a lot of Tool songs quite challenging myself. |

So i got the exact date I started guitar and I have been playiong for 22 months just shy of two years and since I last posted I have learnt all of Voodo CHild (SLight Return) and all of Yellow ledbetter |

One, it is spelled Voodoo Chile, not Voodo CHild. Two, the OP was totally right. Awesome, congrats on learning Voodoo Chile, it shouldn't be too hard if you've been playing for 22 months but still, it's a decently challenging piece. But in the end, is it really that impressive playing other people's crap? The music one writes displays musical talent, not just being able to mimic someone else. |
keep in mind there's a difference between being a musician and being a guitarist.
there's nothing wrong with focusing on covers. i did it for about 5 years before i started playing with other people. it's a good way to develop technical chops. as for being impressive, it can be. think of it like this, anyone can start a band and get a few shows. on the other hand, a cover band that wants to play gigs has to be able to convince a crowd that they're at least a halfway decent version of the real thing. are symphony musicians inferior because the majority of their time is spent playing other peoples music? as for voodoo chile, it was about the 2 year mark for me as well hehe as for more tunes (tabs shouldn't be hard to find) jane's addiction - three days led zeppelin - achilles last stand eric johnson - cliffs of dover king crimson - 21st century schizoid man |
I find a lot of videogame music is very challenging. Try some of the F-Zero songs, tetris theme, and the final fantasy 7 battle music or boss music.
The black mages do a lot of cool stuff too, check them out. |
don't forget contra :thumb:

Jesus man, the game was hard enough on its own!
|
Playing and practicing `other` peoples songs would surely help your own musical ability and therefore also help if you were writing original stuff too?
I don`t see the harm. |
