Guitar or Drums?
In August, I got myself a guitar. At the time, I really, REALLY wanted to learn the guitar. It's been about a month now. About a week after I got the guitar, I started thinking about the drums as well and how enjoyable it would be to play them.
So, anyway, a month went by, and I've been learning the guitar. I'm not very good at it (as expected.) However, I also found myself quickly losing interest in it. Right now, the only thing keeping me going is the fact that, once I get good, that interest will spark up again. So, today, I was at my cousin's house. He had an old, unused guitar set in the basement. Started playing it. Enjoyed it. Really enjoyed it. Pretty much thought that that was what I wanted to play. Then, I remembered guitar. Now I'm not sure on which to choose. Which instrument is harder to learn? Which instrument is more fun (in your opinion)? Does the guitar get much more enjoyable once you get better at it? Which should I choose? Any information at all that you could include would be great. Thanks. |
it all depends what kind of music you wan to play one of my friends plays the drums and he says some songs can be really easy but some are very challenging guitar on the other hand is more frustrating imo but also more fun if thats what youre into

Which is better, an adjective or a noun?
|
play both!!
|
You can't pick up an instrument and expect to be amazing after the first week. It takes dedication and practice.
Once you get better at it, your fingers move by themselves. It can be great fun when you listen to a beat and you improvise a solo. My girlfriend plays the drums and they look like a lot of fun. However, you can't bring a drum kit to a campfire and serenade your buddies. |

I've been playing BASS (easier than guitar) for 4 months now and I still can only play incredibly basic things. If you really love what you are doing and want to be good...practice practice practice. Speed and hand control come with time.

If you continue on with the guitar you should consider why you started in the first instance. I knew someone a long time ago who tried to learn simply because he wanted to be cool BUT (and here`s the thing) he had no real love or passion for music, so it was an uphill battle and thankfully i think he gave it up. If you have a favourite band or style of music, try learning and understanding some easier songs first and develop that. Be content with what you can sound `good` at and let natural development flow at its own pace. Apart from my own experience, i`m writing this after watching my son practice and learn for a few years now. He started off with just me showing him some chords and the blues scale but didn`t really have the inner desire to develop, and the practicing lapsed. Then just this year, he saw the Nirvana unplugged dvd and was enamoured by the performance - he then wanted and worked hard to play some Nirvana songs. The rapid development was astounding to me, but it all comes from the inner love of music in my opinion. And of course, sometimes we all just need a rest from practicing, and when we come back to the instrument it feels fresh again? Try this thread if it might help too. |
My friend was very good (progressing-wise) and it took him 5ish months to get used to playing fast and complicated songs. Some people are just more skilled than others naturally, so if you are like me (I play bass) and aren't a 'natural' so to say just stick with it because you love it.
Or switch to bass, much easier to start out with but you basically have to give up the idea of playing a guitar, it's hard to get used to playing a guitar once you have played bass for awhile. |
Why not both?
|
well it would be kind of hard for him to learn both at the same time (kind of the point of the thread)
|
reason?
|
well getting drums = huge hassle when playing gigs
where as guitar = easy and portable |

Im a guitar person myself.
Guitars own! |
I think as a starter we all wanted to completely own at the instrument then we realized that it has to take some time.
For me I think both are really fun instruments to play...drums are good for annoying the horrible neighbors and mess around with. Guitars the same. So I say both. |
I play the drums and I am trying to learn chords on guitar so I can write melodies...I had a knack for the drums and my brother is a self taught guitar player. He has been playing for 24 years and is very good but is no Eric Clapton as I am no Neil Peart...Some people are just naturals and some aren't...But it is a rare person who just can play great without a lot...a whole lot of practice...
|
Good. Clapton and Peart suck.
|
i prefer guitar...i have tried playing drums but i find it more difficult so I just stick with playing guitar...

drums drums drums
I noticed some people sayin that its a hassle to carry a drum set, and also you cant serenade your friends around a campfire with one. my defense for drums over guitar.
1) chicks dig drummers more than other musicians 2) everyone HATES that douche bag that walks around with an acoustic guitar and plays music all the time. 3) who the F*CK serenades their friends around a camp fire? (unless they're lady friends, in which case its worth it to drag a drum set to the campfire, because you'll make the kid with the acoustic guitar cry. 4) drum solos are WAY cooler than drum solos. 5) you can practice drums anytime, anywhere if you have a pair of sticks, the same cant be said of guitar. unless you feel like luggin an acoustic everywhere. 6)chicks dig drummers more than other musicians. 7) playing the drums regularly builds muscle. 8) drums are awesome 9) drums are loud 10) drums are WAY more fun to play with. 11) and finally, chicks dig drummers more than other musicians. |

well of course there are exceptions to the rule, but I've found in my experiences, that women just tend to dig drummers more. women will crush on the lead singer, but they'll boink the drummer. haha yes, i did say boink. I'm sorry your experiences havent shown similar findings. and i dont mean that sarcastically, i got nothin but love and respect for my fellow drummers, because there are also downsides to being a drummer, and one is being the brunt of all the other musicians jokes. But that just inspires me to practice harder, and learn more theory.

I prefer quality to quantity anyway so its all good...I don't want hepatitus(sp?)...

Well being a girl I can tell you I have no preference what-so-ever in what instrument a potential beau plays. I wouldn't want to get up someone if they were hairy, had bad teeth, or hepatitus EVEN IF they were a lead singer or guitarist. |

Ohhhh okay, so it's the dumb girls you guys are after ;)
Well I don't know then! Guess you'll have to move posts from the drumkit to the lead mic stand... :D |

Too bad for hairy guys.

Or maybe dumb girls are the only ones that go for drummers ;)

Maybe that's why Tommy Lee has hepatidus(sp?).

Hey, if you lost interest with the guitar in one month, I don't think that's your instrument.
Choose whatever feels right to you. I chose the guitar because from the moment I started to watch video lessons and videos of guitarists just riffing away without even owning a guitar myself, I knew the guitar was my instrument.:yeah: |
One word PRACTICE!!!!
Ive been teaching myself music theory ..drums ..guitar and piano since Sept. ..i can play a few incubus and led zeppelin songs ....its all about the time u put into it ....as to difficulty in instrument play ..it depends what song or waht kinda music you're playing ...personally i find drums easier for me but i love playing the guitar more ....so play both but jus PRACTICE!! |
