1. Lars Ulrich shouldn't be on here.
2. Because Lars Ulrich isn't that good.
3. He sure as hell shouldn't be above the great Bonzo.
4. Bonzo as in Bonham, not Bohnam.
5. Grohl and the guys from Aic, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Screaming Trees all in the top 10?

I take it you're a grunge fan.

Blain 07-05-2007 02:10 AM

Grohl isn't bad, wouldn't put him in top 10.

^^Lawl.

boo boo 07-05-2007 05:22 PM

I didn't say they weren't good. Just nowhere near the best.

Check out all the drummers I just mentioned, and then tell me that Lars Ulrich and Dave Grohl are better than them.

Voice_of_the_Soul12,13,01 07-05-2007 07:04 PM

In no order

Gene Hoglan
Paul Mazurkiewicz
Marco Minnemann
Frost
Richard Christy

Of course this could be more of a list of my favorite drummers rather than the best drummers, so sowwy.

Hahahahahahaha.

boo boo 07-05-2007 09:34 PM

I think he was trying to insult me.

But Saying "I take it in your assh0le" is not quite what I would call a good insult, in fact, he inadvertedly insulted himself.

Prog drummers = robotic retardssz

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 07-08-2007 06:03 PM

Listen to the dude who used to be in The Mars Volta, Jon Theodore. Hardly robotic. That guy is sick.

Absolutely not. Metal drummers have a tendacy to repeat themselves, too much bass drum emphasis.

A prog drummer can do just about anything. Behold.

dRool 07-19-2007 02:47 PM

Bonzo Peart Zach Hill (see Hella) Damon Che (See Don Cab) and I really like Brian Chippendale (Lightning Bolt) and Jeremiah Green (Modest Mouse, he played on early albums).

The drummer from The Appleseed Cast's latest album does some creative stuff.

?uestlove is always a blast to watch.

Glenn Kotche from Wilco has some of the most amazing independence I've seen (look at his bell work).

There are many more.

joyboyo53 07-19-2007 02:50 PM

i dont know that much about drumming per say. what do you guys think of arctic monkeys drummer? i dont know if he is talented or if its just catchy, but i really like they way he plays.

Larkrise 07-19-2007 10:05 PM

Neil Peart ( Rush)
Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa)
Ainsley Dunbar ( Jeff Beck )

You're an idiot... :banghead:

I'm ignoring jazz/session drummers, because they're in a completely different category and incomparable.

1. Danny Carey (Tool)
2. Martin Lopez (Opeth)
3. Neil Peart (Rush)
4. Bill Bruford (King Crimson, Yes etc.)
5. Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Death, SYL, Testament etc...)
6. Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree)
7. Tim Alexander (Primus)
8. Stewart Copeland (Sting and the Police)
9. Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins)
10. Tomas Haake (Meshuggah)

Even though I said I'm ignoring jazz/session drummers... I feel the need to say this. Vinnie Colaiuta is possibly the greatest drummer known to man. I saw Herbie Han**** with Colaiuta and even as a non-drummer I was practically exploding in my pants. That guy is so skilled, yet so tasteful. He has the perfect fills and doesn't overplay at all... He is amazing.

Farfisa 05-01-2011 09:42 AM

I've recently been in love with John McEntire's drumming. He has been in Stereolab, Gastr Del Sol and The Red Krayola, but is now currently in The Sea And Cake and Tortoise. His style is just so clean and powerful, kind of jazzy, and is just always changing up the rythym.

EvilChuck 05-01-2011 04:42 PM

In no particular order, just a few that I like (mostly metal drummers)

Pete Sandoval (Morbid Angel)
Gene Hoglan (Death)
Dave Lombardo (SLAYERRRRRR)
Neil Peart (RUSH)
George Kollias (Nile)
Chris Adler (Lamb Of God)
Mike Smith (Suffocation)
Martin Lopez (Opeth)
Frost (1349)
Hellhammer (Mayhem/Arcturus)
Donald Tardy (Obituary)

Edit: And Thomas Haake (Meshuggah)

Dayvan Cowboy 05-01-2011 05:00 PM

Best Drummer ever = Damon Che
He's a mother****ing octopus.

NGPercussion 05-01-2011 11:04 PM

I simply cannot BELIEVE the utter disregard of Buddy Rich in this thread.

Hmm, perhaps I'm biased because I just ranted about him in another thread, but what of Blake Richardson from BTBAM?

As for my list, I can't say I know many drummers off hand aside from the ones at the top of this list. Danny Carey is definitely up there for me. When it comes to instruments in a traditional band, I am partial to the bass.

BastardofYoung 05-02-2011 09:08 PM

Not a single mention of John Wright from NoMeansNo. He is amazing, doesn't seem to get much credit.

Josh Freese is another I would add.

NGPercussion 05-03-2011 12:00 AM

Josh Freese is also essential. He's played with a ton of bands on over THREE HUNDRED records.

Phantom Limb 05-03-2011 11:18 AM

Oltrelogo 05-06-2011 05:33 AM

According to my opinion music and drumming is subjective, and everyone will have their own idea of who the best drummers are.

Drumolator 05-10-2011 07:02 PM

My FAVORITES are these, at least right now. Tomorrow may be different.

Vinnie Colaiuta ( He can play anything out there.)
Gregg Bissonette
Phil Ehart (Kansas)
Mike Portnoy
Will Kennedy (Yellowjackets)

I have been a drummer since 1967.

he is such a douchebag. yeah hes good but there are definitely better I can think of like Zach Hill or Greg Saunier.

All these prog drummers are lame. I have respect for them and everything but they really don't compare to some of the drummers today.

Neapolitan 05-31-2011 07:01 PM

Carmine Appice
Carter Beauford
John Bonham
Bill Bruford
Neil Pert
Mel Taylor
Charlie Watts

Stephen 05-31-2011 10:06 PM

I love the drums on the old Black Sabbath stuff. Especially War Pigs.

ThePhanastasio 05-31-2011 10:30 PM

I'll go with:

Terry Bozzio
Mike Portnoy
Charlie Watts
Jon Fishman
Stewart Copeland
Bill Kreutzmann

I'm surprised you mentioned Charlie Watts, because he gets entirely overlooked.

ThePhanastasio 05-31-2011 11:35 PM

I love some Charlie Watts. Phenomenal drummer, and my favorite member of The Rolling Stones.
