that's kind of an impossible question to ask. getting progressively better at guitar doesn't grow in a linear pattern. everyone who plays guitar developed at a different rate so getting a definite answer to that wouldn't happen.

plothead31 01-24-2008 05:42 AM

haha stairway to heaven was the first complete song (minus the solo) i learned how to play thanks to tab.

As songs go for beginners, "Smoke on the Water" is a good one but I gotta say, the song has been ruined for me with hearing it on the 'beginner' guitar so much.

Here's a list of some easy to play beginner songs that offer a little variety.

There are a lot of Beatles songs here, but actually for as popular and creative as the Beatles were, their songs are quite easy to learn --- if you like the Beatles that is :yeah:

Bad Moon Risin' (Creedence Clearwater Revival)

California Dreaming (Mama's and the Papa's)

As Tears Go By (The Rolling Stones)

Daydream Believer (The Monkees)

Dock of the Bay (Otis Redding)

Eight Days a Week (The Beatles)

Have You Ever Seen the Rain (CCR)

I Saw Her Standing There (The Beatles)

I Should Have Known Better (The Beatles)

I've Just Seen a Face (The Beatles)

Mellow Yellow (Donovan)

Midnight Special (CCR)

Nowhere Man (The Beatles)

Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da (The Beatles)

apparently, if you can't play all the generic ass-rock of the 70s then you're not good at guitar.

GuitarBizarre 01-26-2008 01:10 PM

My Two penneth is that everyone should at least try to learn:

Black Star
For The Love Of God
Summer Song

And, the main Melody to a Yoko Kanno song called 'The Snow Princess', which I can host somewhere if anyone wants it.

xtrabenbassist15 01-26-2008 01:12 PM

Ok every person that plays guitar has to know at leas the intro to Limelight by Rush and Hot Knives by Bright Eyed

Shannon 01-30-2008 12:16 AM

Time Of Your Life and Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day are easy.

Also Emily by From First To Last isn't too hard either.

DarbyCrashBand 02-02-2008 01:48 PM

Threw the Fire and Flames. Every one I know who owns a guitar hero can play it. After you play for a month its so easy lawl.

My only dream and aspiration in this lifetime is that my head will one day swell up to the size of yours.

Made in Mexico - "Farewell Myth," anyone?

Alfred 02-14-2008 06:22 PM

Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan

Farfisa 02-16-2008 06:24 PM

every guitarist should know how to play yankee doodle......

Necromancer 02-16-2008 07:07 PM

SRV. Voodo Child. The live version with the recorded version. Listen to both cuts learning. / Or adding accents to the songs structure. Add Hendrix's version. = Versatility of style.

Only if they are yankees ;-)

reptron88 10-22-2009 03:07 PM

First songs I learned were iron man, smoke on the water, smells like teen spirit, and the intro to stairway. Most people should be able to learn these by ear... Then once I got better some really fun ones i started playing included crazy train and thunderhorse (these 2 have a really similiar riff), master of puppets, fade to black, six, and if you really wanna prove you're a pro, crossing the rubicon

reiko57 10-25-2009 09:06 PM

hey joe! its pretty easy and people are really impressed by it, even guitarists

Nicktarist 10-26-2009 07:38 AM

When I started, I learned:

Lithium,
Heart Shaped Box,
Karma Police,
China Grove,
Sweet Home Alabama,
Freebird,

...I think it's safe to say that I haven't played any of those songs in years. That was before I learned Paranoid Android and my head disappeared so far up my arse, I couldn't see the light of day, much less learn a new tune for a long time.

peace,
-nick

mr dave 10-26-2009 05:25 PM

they're not impressive but every guitar player should know at least these songs. they spice up any dying jam. whether or not it's to rock it out or fall over laughing at the cheese you just pulled out.

steppenwolf - born to be wild / magic carpet ride
led zep - dazed and confused / communication breakdown
sabbath - iron man / sweet leaf
skynyrd - sweet home alabama
CCR - proud mary
iggy and the stooges - i wanna be your dog
nirvana - smells like teen spirit
neil young - rocking in the free world

for the most part they're 3 chord songs. heck most of rocking in the free world is E hahaha. don't let the simplicity fool you though, they're exactly the kind of songs that just about everyone has heard a million times with melodies and changes simple enough that most people could pick them up relatively quickly in a impromptu jam session.

kouki 10-26-2009 05:38 PM

If you truly learned or are learning to play, every guitarist should know how to play 'twinkle twinkle little star' and not tab either haha. That was the first song I ever learned.

The first song my friend learned was '100 years' by Five for Fighting... so yeah...

storymilo 10-26-2009 05:45 PM

Well I'm just starting... so some songs that I'm learning are

Karma Police- Radiohead- A great song to play, taught me some new chords

Ziggy Stardust- David Bowie- Really fun to get right, and can help with double picking

Mr. Jones- Counting Crows Fun to sing along with

Anything by Neutral Milk Hotel- These songs are so simple to learn but can help early on with strumming patterns and easy chords

Anyways these are just some songs that I have learned, and I've enjoyed them so far.

Rickenbacker 10-26-2009 06:34 PM

Great ones of varying difficulty:

Dick Dale & the Del-Tones - Misirlou: A great gateway into alternate tunings.
Miles Davis - All Blues: Learning this song totally changed how I thought about playing music.
The Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again: Feel good about yourself by playing easy chords fast.
R.E.M. - Driver 8: How to arpeggiate like Mr. Peter Buck himself, the best right-hand in the business.
The Clash - I Fought The Law: Mick Jones: Making crappy guitarists all over the world just a little more badass.
The Jam - That's Entertainment!: Probably the best song to learn first.

What chords are used in this song? Love that tune.

Rickenbacker 10-26-2009 07:28 PM

Bigmouth Strikes Again Chords (ver 2) by Smiths @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com

Easy chords, great tab. You need a capo mind you, or it really won't sound right.

Saggitarian Pulse 10-26-2009 07:31 PM

Neon Knights - Black Sabbath
Excellent groove to the rythym guitar and a wicked lead solo. A definitive "gotta learn" song.

kouki 10-26-2009 07:35 PM

I could just barre the fourth fret with my first finger too, right? I can barre all the frets pretty easy, its the first fret that really takes alota balls tho.lol thanks dude.

I find it hella easier to play a F chord that way, using an e-type barre chord, so maybe you need to work on strengthening your index finger.

BTown 10-31-2009 01:38 PM

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Stacy's Mom by Fountains Of Wayne. :)

LoathsomePete 10-31-2009 02:07 PM

Autumn Leaves

It's an incredibly simple song to play, makes good use to major and minor 7th chords and sounds absolutely beautiful.

Guitarforfun 10-31-2009 11:18 PM

Knocking on heavens door-Bob Dylan

ElephantSack 11-01-2009 12:57 PM

It seems that where I'm from, everybody wants to hear Jimmy ****in' Buffet. Murderous rage ensues.

But in my opinion, just for acoustic acts.. In no order of difficulty, Big Hands by the Violent Femmes, Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah, Angel From Montgomery by John Prine, My Friends and I Could Have Lied by RHCP, and throw in some random Sublime and Nirvana tunes. People seem to like that.
