Bootsy or Jaco?

Well who do you choose as the greatest overall bassist. Greatest includes showmanship and technical ability (that's said to reduce the fights over what greatness means).

so...VOTE

oh and pictures yay!!!

Bootst..One funky guy

tdoc210 08-11-2006 09:16 PM

Bootsy, umm who's Jaco.. <.<

Raine 08-11-2006 11:15 PM

i voted bootsy as the jaco looks like he's never seen a dentist in his life.
and because i'm not exactly sure of who he is

DontRunMeOver 08-12-2006 02:24 AM

Ooooh, I didn't read the initial criteria... Jaco was technically flipping amazing and he used that ability to write really stupid, pointless basslines. Bootsy brought the funk. And he was called Bootsy.

I'm sure Jaco could have played any bassline which was suggested to him and made it sing... but he chose to play crap ones. The tosser.

You suck.

By the criteria mentioned, it's difinetely Jaco, and everyone already knows I'm more of a Bootsy guy myself.

Alo 08-16-2006 11:53 AM

Bootsy ftw!

Dizz-E 08-16-2006 03:31 PM

Bootsy !! OG funk!

boo boo 08-16-2006 03:36 PM

I guess people here are using their own critieria, I surely hope no one here actually thinks Bootsy is more skilled than Jaco.

mosesandtherubberducky 08-16-2006 03:59 PM

He's funky and has a better presence (spelling?). Jaco looks funny (not the cool funny) when he plays live.

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-16-2006 04:05 PM

Bootsy introduced me to the FUNK.

So I vote for him

boo boo 08-16-2006 04:17 PM

Jaco does look funny, but then again, how does Bootsy not look funny?

I may bring back my Bootsy avatar when I get tired of my "Steve Howe putting on his game face" avatar.

hiu 08-16-2006 04:26 PM

Jaco.

DontRunMeOver 08-17-2006 08:12 AM

Why is Jaco being written about in the present tense? This confuses me...

Booboo, you're right that Jaco does win on the stated criteria. Like I said, I voted before reading the thread (as the voting option came up first).

boo boo 08-17-2006 01:07 PM

Too hard to keep up with all dead musicians.

Yeah, Steve Howe is one ugly son of a bitch.

Howe <3<3<3

swim 08-17-2006 05:07 PM

Jaco ftw. They're both amazing. I just think Jaco's definitely better.

Jaco is the greatest bass player that ever lived.

^ That title belongs to James Jamerson. :)

boo boo 08-26-2006 04:18 PM

The greatest by genre.

R&B: James Jamerson
Fusion: Jaco Pastorius
Funk: Bootsy Collins
Blues: Willie Dixon
Jazz: Charles Mingus
Country: Bob Moore
Hard Rock: John Entwistle
Metal: Cliff Burton... Or maybe Steve Harris
Punk: Mike Watt
Prog: Chris Squire

Greatest period: James Jamerson.

You...I like.
With the exception of Punk = Mike Watt.

JJ. Burnell IMO.

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-26-2006 04:39 PM

Peter Hook >>> JJ Burnell :p:

hiu 08-26-2006 04:53 PM

Peter Hook > Mike Watt > JJ Burnell

I love all three of these bassits though, actually they would probably make up my favourite three punk bassists.

right-track 08-26-2006 04:56 PM

Add Tina Weymouth to that list (if you count early Talking Heads as punk) and we could be friends.
Nowhere near as gifted but a favourite all the same.

hiu 08-26-2006 05:18 PM

I would probably throw in some Kira Roessler into the mix too. Tina did have some pretty tasty, funky basslines.

MMMMHMMM

Short story Chris Squire learned bass when he locked himself in his apartment adter taking bad acid, he stayed in his aprtment for a year or 6 months, i forget.

boo boo 08-26-2006 07:27 PM

Peter Hook?... Hmm, I guess you could call Jow Division and New Order punk, Tina Wayworth is decent, but nothing impressive, I'd put her on the same level as Roger Waters, Krist Novoselic, Duff McKagan and Noel Redding... Bassists who made some cool basslines, but nothing beyond that, and anyone should be able to advance to their level after months of practice... In fact, Tina was quite lacking in her abillities as a bassist, to the point that Byrne would have to play more complex bass parts or get other session musicians to do them because Tina was incapable of playing them.

Anywho, I just feel that Watt is the best... And I have to be honest, regardless of who it is, being the best Punk bassist shouldn't be exagerated as being some kind of amazing accomplisment, since most punk bassists are below average... Mike Watt, Matt Freeman, Peter Hook, JJ Burnel, Klaus Flouride, Dave Allen, Paul Simonon, Fred Smith, Charles Dukowski, Kira Roessler, Steve Garvey and Darryl Jennifer being the only primary exceptions I can think of.

Still a good idea to avoid pissing off Misfits fans.

EDIT: But oh well.

under 08-26-2006 10:57 PM

I vote for Bootsy only because he looks WAY more funky than Jaco

dog 10-21-2006 03:53 AM

geez obviously jaco pastorius its kinda stupid voting against jaco if you don't know who he is. (from band 'weather report', then went on to do solo stuff and was killed by a bouncer)

DontRunMeOver 10-21-2006 04:03 AM

^Its not obvious. I've listened to quite a bit of Jaco, never enjoying it but thinking that maybe it was aquired taste and one that it would be good to understand to improve my bassplaying. Eventually had to give up and accept that I just ****ing hated the way he made music.

boo boo 10-21-2006 08:23 AM

What did Hiu do this time?

DontRunMeOver 10-21-2006 12:36 PM

Something like this.

http://www.musicbanter.com/showthrea...481#post296481

Although I don't actually get quite what was going on, I think he was insulting Oojay by reposting his posts with different names in some typically unfunny way.

boo boo 10-21-2006 12:48 PM

He'll be back, a rat always returns to it's hole. :D

Does anyone here actually get perm banned?... Everyone that gets banned here always returns in just a few days.

Most of what happened was deleted.

It's difficult to perm ban a regular member, on the basis that for the most part, even the difficult ones behave.
There have been recent exceptions however, Bill being the latest.
Hiu has a weeks ban and unless things change he will be joining him.
