Of course it's better to start with something less complex... Almost all Jazz requires some good bass, i recomend Charles Mingus, Miles Davis and Bill Evans for some good bass driven jazz.
One important technique that you should try on bass is the slap and pop technique, which is the technique that Flea, Les Claypool, Bootsy Collins and Larry Graham most commonly use... It's easy to learn, dificult to master.

funnest thing i ever learn't to play was the verse to 'me and my bass guitar' was a bitch to learn and took far too long and i had to read alot to figure out how he did it but the way he does it is bloody brilliant.
im gonna check out this jazz bass.
