I think many of the best bands are the ones where the ideas of every member contributes to the overall music, it becomes more of a community thing. In short, I prefer bands over backing bands. And if I join a band, its not going to be a backing band. Why play just to satisfy the ego of some assh*le who think he's the next Bob Dylan? Why not do my own thing? A musician as an artist has the right to indulge himself, regardless of what instrument he plays. Well ok, there are some exceptions, I wouldn't recommend letting the triangle player do a solo.
