What I meant - I should have phrased it differently (sorry) - I meant that if you don't like the voice than you likely will have a hard time listening to the music. But that's just me. If I am annoyed by a singer's voice, but the rest of the band is kickass - the voice will ruin the whole experience. However, if one of the other instruments are off key, I can handle it if the voice is amazing. Make sense?

Depends really.

Vocals are really important in bands where singing is a part of it.
Other than that, Drums for the beat, and Guitar for melody.

Yeah, it is possible to be goofy and witty at the same time. Zappa discovered that thin line between brilliant and stupid. :)

Vocals. Melody and lyrics.

I really hate this thread. It's like a rash that just won't fuck off.

I don't like these questions... but I'd say bass simply because drums = rhythm, guitar = melody, bass = both. Bass fuses the two. But that's not to say a guitarist can't be the rhythm source or a drummer can't play a melody (cough... Neil Peart).

I'm a bassist, but apart from solo bassists like wooten it's generally the trend for the bass to be turned down in recordings, just to lie in the background and such, not a great think, think it's an under appreciated instrument but at the moment i wouldn't say it's by any stretch the most important instrument in a band.

I'd have to go with the guitar. Drums are important, but they're an accompaniment instrument that plays only a supporting role.

You can't craft a melody with just a drum set. You have to sit down with a guitar, keyboard or horn instrument---in order to create a melody.

Without melodies, music would suck totally.

I presume we're talking about rock bands here. In rock music, the guitar has been used to create far more melodies than keyboard and horn instruments.

So if we're talking rock only, the guitar wins rather easily IMHO.
