i would have to say
oxygen.

air is the
medium through which
the instrument conveys
the sound.

come on,
what the **** kinda stupid survey is this?
its a personal preference

I doubt mozart considers drums one of the essential
elements to his music,
but a band like the Who would.

i choose,
due to my influences and
experiences, the
accordian, accordingly.

I enjoyed that post thoroughly. Mostly because it stated what I was about to say, except in a much more eloquent and entertaining manner.

Seriously though, it's ridiculous to argue for any of these. Anyone creative enough could make beautiful music with one, all, none, or any combination of these instruments.

Most surveys and discussions are based entirely on personal opinions. You wouldn't really have to debate something if it was a set fact. Oh wait, I forgot how a lot of Christians don't believe in evolution. Well, for the most part people don't debate set facts.

Default What I think

Every instrument carries in my book a place. IE a guitar can't (in most music) replace what the drums impact in a song. Yes most cases the melody is wrote by the guitar and lyrics by the singer, but to assign importance to one or the other, to me anyways is impossible.

Guitar is the soul, man.

No guitar = No band

Probably explains why Keane suck..

I also mentioned before that you can hear the bass through good speakers/headphones, but usually not through bad ones, which lots of people use and don't seem to mind the missing bass. That was kinda my main point.

Also, depending on the genre, the bass can be mixed very differently. Or just if its a ****ty recording. I got new speakers for my ipod that are really nice, and I'm starting to notice the bass more in a lot of songs, but a lot of punk songs I can still barely discern the bass. On the other hand, even with pretty bad speakers I can hear the bass in ska songs. So I would say its probably just the music rather than my ears.
Its harder to hear because somethines the tone of a bass can get mixed up with very distorted guitar. Thats why you can't hear punk rock bassists worth a damn, because the guitars are loud and the bass isn't. And the reason they keep the bass volume low is because it hides their poor bass playing. You see, sloppy guitar playing dosen't necessarily hurt a song but sloppy bass playing always does. Thats why I don't like quiet bass players, they're pussies.

Its not like you can't enjoy a song without being able to hear bass. But being able to hear the bass justs provides a much different expieriece. Its not really complete when all you hear is the guitars and drums.

Also a lot of the time in punk the bass only plays the roots of the power chords that the guitar is playing. Which is why even when you can hear the bass in punk it often doesn't add much at all.

I agree completely with the second part of your post, but I still wonder if people could enjoy a song without the guitar. I don't think I could. Thats the reason I voted for guitar as most important instrument.
