i would have to say
oxygen. air is the medium through which the instrument conveys the sound. come on, what the **** kinda stupid survey is this? its a personal preference I doubt mozart considers drums one of the essential elements to his music, but a band like the Who would. i choose, due to my influences and experiences, the accordian, accordingly. |

I enjoyed that post thoroughly. Mostly because it stated what I was about to say, except in a much more eloquent and entertaining manner. Seriously though, it's ridiculous to argue for any of these. Anyone creative enough could make beautiful music with one, all, none, or any combination of these instruments. |

Most surveys and discussions are based entirely on personal opinions. You wouldn't really have to debate something if it was a set fact. Oh wait, I forgot how a lot of Christians don't believe in evolution. Well, for the most part people don't debate set facts.

What I think
Every instrument carries in my book a place. IE a guitar can't (in most music) replace what the drums impact in a song. Yes most cases the melody is wrote by the guitar and lyrics by the singer, but to assign importance to one or the other, to me anyways is impossible.

Its not like you can't enjoy a song without being able to hear bass. But being able to hear the bass justs provides a much different expieriece. Its not really complete when all you hear is the guitars and drums. Last edited by boo boo; 07-05-2007 at 09:37 PM. |

Also a lot of the time in punk the bass only plays the roots of the power chords that the guitar is playing. Which is why even when you can hear the bass in punk it often doesn't add much at all.
I agree completely with the second part of your post, but I still wonder if people could enjoy a song without the guitar. I don't think I could. Thats the reason I voted for guitar as most important instrument.
