You lucky bastards can choose.
We poor kiddos have to be happy with the musicshop being open. (': They only have one kind which suits my guitar, so I never bothered reading which type it was.

Since I last posted here, I've changed my preference. I have a set of DR 10's on my ESP which I HATE. They have horrible tone and they're too loose. I'm going to start using the same ones I have on my RS530. On my Ibanez RS530 I have a set of Ernie Ball Slinky Top, Heavy Bottoms. Top three would come from a 10 set, and bottom three would come from an 11 set. I just got a new 70's/80's (don't know) Ibanez Blazer Custom that I have Slinky 9's on.
My 80's Iceman doesn't have strings

^I played a set of Blue Steels a while ago. I wasn't impressed. They made my guitar sound tinny.

I really like the feel and tone of DR's - I usually go with 9's on my Les Paul and 10's on my Charvel (because I want a little extra on the guitars I abuse the whammy on!) These are usually the normal "Tite Fit" strings- although I've really liked the all-nickel strings on the Les Paul..gives a fantastic warmth to the tone- perfect for jazz and blues-rock type of stuff.
I remember finding a 9.5 gauge SOMEWHERE.. think it might have been DR.. but have also seen some D'Addario 9.5 gauge.. seems to work rather well because you have all the benefits of the lighter gauge for ultra-fast playing and brightness of tone- yet still get a good mid-range sound out of them. I've YET to find a coated string that sounds good.. seems that I can't have coated strings and Low action at the same time... winds up sounding like a banjo. I see a lot of odd stuff come out every now and then- Markley's making some sorta "California strings"?? -Looks like it's in a shoe polish can...what's THAT all about? |

Over the years I've been through alot of string brands and types. Finally I've settled on XL's. I havent broken one yet- I broke Markley's constantly, and they stretch once, and stay. Plus I like their good but not overly bright sound. Great tone.
Electric: XL's - 11's Acoustic: D'darrio phospher bronze - 12's

GHS Super Boomers 10-52 standard and drop-D tuning
A few years ago when I was playing a lot Elixir kept sending me string sets to use but I thought they sounded dull and lifeless.
