Trumpet or Trombone? (rock, favorite bands, miles davis, guitarist, solo)

Well, I want to be able to play solos in a band, and I want an instrument that can vary how high or low the sound is.

I really like the trumpet (if it is) in some Ska bands, but dislike it's high notes and find them a pain to listen too.

As for the trombone, I haven't really heard it in any of the bands I listen to. I'm guessing it plays in sync with the trumpet.

Also what do you mean by "doesn't lend it self to much"?
