12 string bass

anybody ever heard of a 12 string bass?

how do you play one?

I think I saw one in a concert .. Don't know how this thing can be played, but still it looks nice ..

ClayManSteve 02-16-2006 02:28 PM

yes, it's played like a 12 string guitar, or and 8 string bass.

they are played by hitting 3 (2 in an 8 strings case) at the same time, giving it a fuller sound. the tunings for one would be Eee-Aaa-Ddd-Ggg. for each standard bass string there are 2 smaller (long guitar) strings that are one octave higher.

:afro:

sTEVE!

although awesome that bass is, that's a completely different thing than i think he's talking about.

you're showing an insane 11 string each with individual notes.

but i think he meant 12 sting with tripled notes. i could be wrong tho.

i was just looking for an excuse to post that awesome link :D

And how about that Chapman Stick, eh? :P

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 03-11-2006 10:23 PM

^those things are insane. apparently there are only like....300 (i may be wrong on this number, the last time i actually heard anything about these was about 2 years ago, so my memory is a little shaky) of those ever. my old music teacher had one. it was crazy.

tdoc210 03-13-2006 08:39 PM

My couzin plays it and i've seen how hard is it on a count of how big it is

Crawldaddy 04-02-2006 09:56 PM

Hmm.

Last time i checked... John Paul Jones plays one of those.

(John Paul Jones is bassist of Led Zep for those who dunno who the heck he is)

However, given the fuller sound, wouldn't the added strings be overkill?

Cheers,

Crawldaddy
