Currently I am playing a 1978 Pre-EB Musicman Stingray bass, which I looove. The finish was white at one stage, but it has aged nicely to a cream. I definitely prefer the sound of the 2-band EQ on these old Stingrays, the new Ernie Ball Stingrays with the 3-band EQ just does not have the same warmth. But luckily they are still offer four string versions with the old school 2-band EQ. If anyone is looking to get a Stingray I would highly recommend choosing the 2-band EQ version, this is the Stingray sound on all the old funk records (Chic and the Brothers Johnson come to mind).
Some people say Stingrays are one-trick-ponies, which is not absolutely true. Just by changing the position of the right hand could provide you a nice variety of tones. I am currently lusting after a nice Precision bass, love that flatwound string-and-rolled off tone sound, classic. |
