I've seen those stickers! I never had to use them as I used my boyfriend's violin which has a well-worn fingerboard. So I would place my fingers where his fingers had been before, haha. Getting used to the bow will take a couple of weeks with regular practice, especially learning to hold it properly at the frog. Also make sure you use the rosin so you'll be able to make a sound!

I was a little overzealous with the rosin and now my strings are caked with the stuff.

You can just wipe it off, no problems there. Wipe the extra off the bow as well, and from then on you will only need one or two layers of rosin. I've done it too!
