Never heard anything bad about Larivee, probably a good purchase.
|
Played a brand new D-03 at the guitar shop for about 15 minutes, didn't like it quite as much as the one I played a few weeks ago, action was much higher too, at least I know it wasn't the same model now. Going to keep looking.

The hell is that?
http://www.aliensandstrangersmusic.c...m-stbc_MED.jpg I sold a few items that I wasn't using any more and got this. It's an LTD M300FM and it has the nicest neck I have ever had with a guitar. The EMG pickups are fun and the Floyd Rose bridge so far keeps everything in tune, although it's a Special and I've heard those can be finicky. I think I'm going to put some .12s on it, drop it down to B and use it as my death metal guitar. |
It's a sweet African instrument called a ngoni.

IBANEZ RULES!! tech - setup The LTD trem should be pretty similar to an Ibanez. |
Honestly... this isn't my first guitar with a FR, but I could never get the hang of restringing them. Luckily, a friend of mine is a luthier and does my basic setups for free, or at a fairly low cost (usually a six pack).

When it comes to amps I've almost always used solid state combo amps due to budget and living limitations. Recently I bought a used Peavey Supreme XL head and Randall 4x12 cab, and while the cab is pretty nice, I'm a little less than enthused by the head. It was a steal at $115 (talked down from $160) but I find that the cleans sound very hollow and the lead channel sounds too compressed. I've got it dialed in to where I can play it, but it's not the sound I really want. I've been looking at alternatives but I can't really seem to decide on if I want to stay solid state (for the price) or if I want to go tube. I've been eyeing a Blackstar HT-5R head on CL for $250, but I'm not sure if 5w would be enough to be heard over a drummer in a gig. While I'm not currently in a band, I'd like to at least have a gig worthy amp. As I've never really used tube amps, what is the wattage equivalent to a solid state?
|
and now someone is selling a Peavey VK212 100w combo tube amp for the same price... that's almost too tempting to pass up.
|
5 tube watts is freaking loud. Really loud unless the room is big. Not sure if you know this but watts don't work in a linear scale. 5 watts is half as loud as 50 watts. 10 watts is half as loud as 100 watts, etc.
Check this out. http://donniebshawn.com/pics/watts.jpg |
That really puts things into perspective.
I traded my Randall RX412 cab and $125 and now have a Peavey VK212 :D |
If anyone wants to see my jaguar and hear my rig in action.

So I've been looking around for a rig that I can haul everywhere since my rehearsal / gigging rig is a cumbersome beast far too powerful for bedroom jams (MESA Single Rectifier Solo 50 Head / Laney IRT212 Cab). Yesterday I managed to get ahold of a local guy on Craigslist and picked up a MESA Mark III Combo (all tube - 75W / 15W simul-class - two EL34 and 6L6 power tubes, five 12AX7 preamp tubes) for $800. It's a mammoth for its size. Must weigh at least 60 pounds and the thing cranks more than enough for rehearsals / gigging at full power, despite being only a 1x12. Flip the power switch down to 15W class A and you've got yourself an impressive all tube practice amp for at home, and being a MESA with all of the gain wizardy that comes along you can easily push the tubes at low volumes. Fantastic thick cleans, huge versatile vintage MESA distortion. All I want to do is go home and play it for the rest of the day.

Nice Boogie! I have one of these.
http://www.in2guitar.com/express/expressdrama.jpg I'd be careful putting your lap top on top of those speakers unless the magnets are shielded! |
I looked so hard for an Express 5:25 and almost got one for $700 but the guy never replied to my email. Wasn't about to pay $1500 for a new one.

What do you typically use for a practise amp? I think I've seen you post it before but I've forgotten.

Oh man my ears are watering, I would love to try one of those some day. The Greg V demos are so good.

Just ordered a Wilkinson Compensated 3 Brass Saddle bridge for my baby, stoked.
Chula do you have a Wilkinson or is it another brand? http://i.imgur.com/nwYsjOc.png?1 EDIT: Scratch that, found out the hole pattern doesn't match American Standard Teles, gotta track down a Callaham Compensated bridge. |
Wilky all the way.

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/znlK32BICgM/0.jpg Peavey VK 412 Straight cab. Blackstar HT-5R Head A few weeks ago I got a killer deal on a Peavey VK212 100w tube amp, and while it sounds absolutely amazing, it is way too loud for bedroom use. I really wanted to keep using a tube amp because their tone is just so much better than a solid state but I needed something I could actually hear and use in the bedroom. The cabinet I scored from a pawnshop for $70 because it was missing the logo and they didn't know what it was. Generally these things retail for around $200 used and $350 new, so I got a pretty smoking deal. |
Those Blackstar's sound amazing. Designed by two dudes who worked for years at Marshall.
|
I've tried out quite a few different Blackstar models and I have been quite impressed with everything I've seen. I was looking really hard at the combo amp version but I've been experiencing a bit of tube rattle with my VK212 which has me a little weary of combo tube amps now. It's not as noticeable on a dirty channel, but certain notes on my clean channel buzz quite a bit. I've had a look at them and noticed that one tube was a little crooked so I moved it back into position which has largely damped the rattle, but it still comes through a little bit.
|
Plus not a fan of having the tubes hanging upside down. They definitely burn hotter in a combo since there's really very little convection cooling like with a head.
That's one of the things I really like about the Swart. It's a combo but the tubes face in the right direction. http://swartamps.com/tech/manuals/at..._back2_600.jpg |
Love that Swart.
I brought my recently acquired '85 MESA Mark III to a jam party on the weekend, had to take a wheel off to fit it in the trunk, forgot to put it back on when I was unloading, amp tipped over (hardcase on and all), master volume knob was sticking out a bit further than the other knobs (because it was replaced with a larger knob in the past), absolutely shattered the pot, took the board out of the cab to investigate and the rod had literally slammed through the base of the potentiometer, spilling its guts all over the inside of the controls. Its at the amp doctor getting inspected and fitted with a new pot right now, sucks, was really looking forward to showing it off that night. Ended up getting to play through a buddy's Hughes $ Kettner stack instead, which wasn't so bad. |
Those Swarts are great. Thinking about getting one for live gigging. Need something small since we usually just play acoustic gigs at all the breweries. Also considering a fender Princeton or something like that.

Haven't purchased yet, but definitely in my wishlist.
Guitar - Ibanez GRG Amp - Lin 6 Spider IV 30 Watts Will cost $200 each, but it'll definitely motivate me to start playing. I'm dropping the idea of starting small from previous experiences. Skateboard. $40 Sports Authority Board -> $120 Complete board. Microphone. $15 Insignia boom mic -> $130 Blue Yeti Webcam. $10 potato -> $80 Logitech C920. Better balance, speed, and I'm on cusp of learning tricks. The microphone is soo good, I can't even sound bad if I tried. As for the camera, I can actually see myself in it! |

This is my Yamaha SVC-110 SK Silent Electric Cello. It's made of maple and spruce, which gives playing a really smooth feeling. Playing is possible by plugging in headphones or connecting it to an amp. It can be set to a standard tone as well as three types of reverb. I'm currently playing it with tungsten strings as those are my favorite. This instrument is a beast and the only minor disadvantage I could find is the bridge, which, because of it's badly cut shape, makes playing on multiple strings at once a lot harder. http://i59.tinypic.com/23lgsip.jpg The beauty you see in this picture is the Elite Model of the J.B. Lemoine Maitre Luthier series. I had been playing on this instrument for about 6 years before I bought the Yamaha. It's still playable and I often pick it up to this day, but because of a burst in its neck it sadly isn't what it has been. http://i59.tinypic.com/2rxd7w0.jpg This old friend of mine, which I recently found in my cellar is called the Buffet Crampon Flute, Cooper Scale E ARC. As I've just said, it's an old instrument and it has been through a few repairing sessions as well, so nowadays it can't match the quality it had in the old days. It's still enjoyable to play on though. http://i59.tinypic.com/2akbt4n.jpg The Arturia Microbrute which can be seen in the picture above is an analog synthesizer. It's a synthesizer with only one oscillator, but despite that, it's ridiculously powerful. It's size and price are both very small compared to its quality. MIDI, USB, CV/Gate, etc. are included. |

Who is that?
Remember this? Man, I would have been nervous as that drummer. http://i.imgur.com/bKVeS.jpg |
I have no idea about either one.

http://www.allparts.com/assets/image.../SCH-Z-web.jpg
Just ordered this sight unseen. After hearing a few example videos of it I fell in love with the sound. I kind of wish I could have gotten an SCH-1 but those go for quite a bit more, however I don't think there's much difference between the two and for the price it beats all the competitors. |
Is that the Ibanez one? If yes, yeah they're great. Amazing bang for the buck.
|
Nope, it's an Arion SCH-Z.
