help with guitar
I've only been playing guitar for a couple of months so I'm not very good. I want to learn a complete song in the classic rock/metal genre and am having trouble trying to learn solos, as they're so fast and never seem to sound right.
I'm looking for something relatively easy to play, and I would really appreciate people's opinions on what's the easiest and best song for a beginner to start with. |
If the solos are fast dont try and play them at THAT speed.
Play them very slow and accurate and gradually speed up. I can't think of many rock/metal riffs that are easy its not my area of expertise. Crazy Train/Iron Man/Smoke On The Water/Dead Leaves and The Dirty Ground? I suggest starting with the ramones, nirvana and such first, even if you don't like it it's simple and good to start with it and simple enough. EDIT: didnt see the poll i can play enter sandman its easy enough. |
lol- yeah that would work.
When you're learing a solo at first does it sound kind of plinky plonky and ****, cos that happens to me |

Definately play it at a slower pace and work your way faster. That's how I learn solos and fast paced songs.
I also agree with Alixisonfire |
my first song i learned was Nobodys Fool - Cinderella...ahhh yeah.
|
My first song was....House of the Rising Sun...interesting song.
|
Heartbreaker - led zeppelin
what is and what should never be - Led Zeppelin |
I say you should start off with Enter the Sandman, great song

(Other) Songs that I think were/are simple include: 1."Iron Man"-Black Sabbath. 2."Crazy Train"-Ozzy Osbourne. 3."Back In Black"-AC/DC. 4."Sweet Home Alabama"-Lynyrd Skynyrd. 5."Come As You Are"-Nirvana. 6."Sunshine Of Your Love"-Cream. 7."Hells Bells"-AC/DC. 8."Smells Like Teen Spirit"-Nirvana. That's a good place to start off at."Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Enter Sandman" are pretty much the riffs that every experienced guitar player learns/plays early on.Have a great time jammin' and good luck!!! |
The riff in Iron Man is easy and...I think it's fun to play.

learn the blues scale in A then start with some ac/dc, easy as pie.
|
Just remember to have fun and stay focused!!!Tell us how you improve over time, talk to ya later!!!:)

Thanks for all the help everyone!:p:
^ Yeah cool, thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how I get on! |
My opinion is that you should, at this time, do alternate-picking excercises. Because, unless you have a teacher, in which case you should do what he/she says, chances are you're only doing downstrokes. This means, that when you pick, you should alternate between picking down, pushing the pick to the floor, and then going up, pulling the pick torwards your body. Then when that's comfortable to do, try alternating between strings, then speeding up. After that's down, try to work on your left hand dexterity. So, you should try picking in the following combination on the high E string (Thinnest), B, G, all the way down to the low E string (Thickest).
1-2-3-4-3-2-1 Then, try it with this. 1-4-2-3 Remember to alternate pick all of this. Trust me, I know it's boring, but you'll get much better, much faster. |
^ Thanks. :yeah: I'll practice that to improve my speed!

Hell, who knows...keep on jamming and maybe I'll bring you up on stage with me and...ahem...Dave Mustaine!!!  |
For me it's Nothing Else Matters, the only song i was once able to play ...
|
Come As You Are by Nirvana. It seems to be the one song that people who don't play guitar want to subject me to over and over again. It would be OK if it werent just the first few bars.

Lol- yeah that would me amazing- us jamming with Mustaine!:band: It'll take me about 50 years to get that good- :D But I'm doing fine thanks. Pretty much got the Enter Sandman solo done- It's nothing compared to Holy Wars or Hanger 18, but it's a start at least! Rust in Peace is such a classy album. How's it going with yourself?:yeah: |

yeah, that is a good suggestion to help with that, get a Metronome/tuner thingy i have a Meisel that i got for about 20 bucks and it is my best friend |

By the way, I was looking around at some of my Megadeth album booklets and I came across "Countdown To Extinction."It reminded me of your avatar, so I decided to compare them. Incase you didn't already know, you actually do have the "Countdown To Extinction" pic of Dave as your avatar!!!In closing, yes that album and "Rust In Piece" are both greats, cheers!!! Also-Keep on playing because I'd still love to jam 50 years from now, ya hear? |

It would certainly be great fun and very intense to be in a band with him - I have more chance of being struck by lightning though. lol:D Yeah, I have that picture of him in my Countdown To Extinction booklet too, and it is a cool album. I will keep playing! I'm pretty much addicted now and ,yes, it would be great to jam 50 years from now! |
First song I ever learnt was Hey Joe, nice n easy

In the last few days, I was thinking about another song that I used to play alot that was incredibly easy for me!!!It's another one of Metallica's songs-"For Whom The Bell Tolls."Give it a shot, man...it's very easy to play!!!;)
|
Cool- thanks I'll keep that in mind! I'm trying to get a band together at the moment to jam with and stuff. Only short of drummer.
You've said before that you've been jamming for 15 years- that's so cool. How young were you when you started? I wish I'd started playing earlier. |

Just so ya know, I'd help out and jam with ya here and there if you were nearby, but seeing that you're not only a state away, but ,even more, a country, that would definitely be a long shot, ya know? As for the talk about my "devotion" to music, I probally already said this, but I'll say again that I've been playing on and off for many years!!!:band: In other words, I haven't been playing both guitar and drums for that time period, I've went back and forth!!! As for when I started, well, I'd just have to say that it really began right after Nirvana first came out!!!Nirvana was that big influence that got me more into playing than ever, therefore making me much more serious and devoted to not only listening to, but also playing great music!!! And for anyone else out there, starting early doesn't necessarily mean starting at a young age!!!It is more about starting right now, now that you're more interested/serious about it than ever, instead of waiting/putting it off, ya see? Whether you're 8 years old or 80 years old, start now or suffer the consequences of dying as a terrible musician that could've possibly been known forever as a legend!!! For example, take a look at these guys: 1.Kurt Cobain. 2.Cliff Burton. 3.Randy Rhoads. 4.Eric Carr. 5.Stevie Ray Vaughan. 6.Dimebag Darrell. 7.Layne Staley. 8.Steve Clark. 9.John Lennon. 10.Bon Scott. They all died as legends, not just regular people!!!So, keep on practicing if you ever want your music to "live on", ya hear?;) Nice talkin' again, judas!!!See ya later!!!:D |
Yeah, it would be cool to jam with you. Shame bout the distance. lol
I agree with your list of legends- especially Cliff and Dimebag. They were metal gods.:drummer: I've taken your advice about For Whom The Bell Tolls. It is pretty simple and such a good song, so I'm going to learn the lead part and my friend's going to do rhythm and vocals. Hows your music going at the moment? I wish I had more time to dedicate to learning guitar. Hope you've been listening to lots of Megadeth :D |
yea i agree with the other ppl start off slowly like @ 60 which may seem extreme but its actually hard to play slow and also ill improve or sense of rhythm soo yea
one more thing....learning to tap is very helpful for solos |
Try learning 'Living After Midnight' by Judas Priest, that song rocks and its easy the solo is kinda fast but simple.:-)
