I take lessons. They help like all get out. They make it easier for me to understand music and not just learn songs and all. (simple sentences make the world go round)

i've done both... i think it is good tostart out with lessons... i took lessons for about 8 or 9 months... then taught myself the rest. i play drums but it goes for every instrument... once you learn the basicas... if youre taking lessons then after that youre learning your teachers particular playing style... my advice is... learn the basics of your instrument... then develop your abilities yourself it helps keep you more in-tune with your particular playing style as well as helping you to built your musical thought process and creativity.
