Playing music VS writing music

I have a friend that always plays metallica and whatever guitar solo sounds good.He goes for the technical aspect of music rather than writing good music.I feel sorry for him. I am however totally biased to writing whatever sounds good to me on whatever instrument it sounds best.
I just think that the macho image of Rock is totally useless if it sounds like everything else.

thats exactly the same with me... I make everthing myself and totally ignore tabs, though I taught myself with tabs. I can play along to anything he makes but he cant to me. Its dumb because his sound is way to mainstreem (todays rock) and mine is totally mine. I dont like playing other peoples music because it gives no credit to me

Cool- I love the Jackson Flying Vs and the amp you're going to get sounds pretty amazing! I've only been playing for a month and I'm teaching myself so I'm not very good yet. Are you self taught? I really enjoy playing my guitar and listening to music-so much so that i fail some of my classes too- lol.

How long were you playing before you started writing your own stuff?

No well ok i have lessons, i started them after i was pretty good, and i just take them to improve my soloing, so he just gives me alot of techneques, and now i can solo like a madman ok that was a lie, but i am still pretty good.

I started right away. I recorded whatever sounded good and built off of it. I think nofx tabs really got me playing, even though I dont listen to punk rock at all.

i agree totally. to write you're own music you don't need to be up to anyone else standards, because what else do they have to judge it by? originality is the main thing i look for in any kind of music.

yeah, but the "band wagon" of music trends really brings in money, and always will. record labels always bring in money with money written music.I hate money! I dont ever buy into the mainstreem ever unless it is a good song in melody, which about every good song is...

yeah it always will, there are bands out there though that have broken into the mainstream without comprimising their sound, eg. system of a down, very popular, very original and talented.

Sure songwriting is more important, but good musicianship dosent hurt, it all depends on what kind of music you write. If you write punk, alternative rock or something along those lines, you dont need very talented musicians, but if we are talking about something like Jazz, Metal or Prog, you will certainly need a good musician or two. Sid Vicious could write a very complex song is he wanted to, but no way in hell would he have actualy been able to play it.

crimepartner 11-16-2005 12:32 PM

complexity is a necessity in music to me. if it has power then I think that is the best thing it could have. The only kinda punk band I like is the clash.if thats, whatever. I always hear little kids saying rancid! sid vicious! ramones! so that really turns me off to that type of music.
