Hello,

I'm conducting research for an assignment about online concerts and streaming. My questions to you are: what do you think about online concerts? What are the positives and negatives? Do you see any development in concerts for the future? Finally, do you think online concerts are good or bad (what makes them worth it or not)?

You'd have to spend quite a bit to get the same level of sound, for one. And B, there's more of a feeling of accomplishment after buying the ticket, waiting, getting ready the day of, traveling to the venue, finding your seat, seeing/being/feeling the crowd around you and then being able to see the stage and everything when the concert starts without being directed to where the production team points the camera's.

In light of the recent events, I can see why the need for Online Concerts is trending though. Imo, they'd be too constricting and stale with the way live music has evolved.

I prefer online concerts. Due to bad health I can't reserve tickets for a real concert, because I don't know if I'll be able to attend. Neither do I know if at the day of the concert I will like the programmed music. Sometimes I prefer to listen to Bach. If the orchestra is going to play Van Beethoven, I won't enjoy myself. And then there's the virus of course. Not really an incentive.

Negatives: In recent situation it is safer to keep people mostly at home for their safety

I think online concerts miss the entire idea.

If you watch a concert online, it’s pretty much like watching a youtube video, or a concert movie. It just isn’t the same energy or feeling. It’s a void. Instead of watching an online concert I’d much rather play myself or watch something in the likes of The Woodstock documentary, or the Scorsese Stones film.

I was never much of a stadium concert fan, as the crowd is too big, the sound isn’t very good usually, and you can’t really see the musicians playing.

But there’s nothing like a club concert. I mean, when there’s just 50-200 people in the audience and a jazz/blues/rock band on stage, it’s pure magic. You can see musicians actually playing, all the little details, you can focus on a certain musician, you see their faces - here, now, before you - they feed off of your energy, the crowd then feeds off of the energy of the band. It’s just a marvelous experience (even when the band is not top-notch).

+ you get the ambience of the venue you went to
+ if it’s a small venue, there’s a big chance you can talk to the players afterwards
+ you can make it a social gathering - like actually go with your friends there

I don’t see how online concerts could have anything in them to top a good old live show

I just can't get into live online concerts. For all the reasons Mucha na Dziko just mentioned. I tried watching a couple of free ones during the past 18 months but I lost interest in both of them after a few minutes. I certainly can't see myself paying to watch one when there are endless concert videos available free of charge on YouTube and other video hosting sites.

I'm generally not a fan of live albums (though there are exceptions) because it seems like a) the studio tracks are better recordings in general and b) wouldn't it a better experience to see them live in the flesh? I think the same thing goes for online concerts. I mean, it's okay if that's the only way you can see the artist but, as others have pointed out, you don't get the same energy. Plus, it's something you can do with friends (I'd never go to a concert by myself).

I agree with Mucha too about the energy you can get from a small club.
