Try to find a mic
 

Hi!

I was going to buy the Rode NT-USB since I like to create rap songs, but then I saw the Audio Technica AT2020 XLR with the Behringer UM2 as the interface audio for aprox. the same price, and I was wondering what's the better option. My voice is very deep, and I heard that the Rode is better for men voices, don't know if that's true.

I would be very thankful if someone could help me to choose ^^

Hi, in my opinion there is no significant difference between that mics. I could only recommend to make some acustic adjustments in your room. That mics are not very good quality but if you have a proper space/room with no fixed waves and separated from the outside you will be satisfied with results.

Most USB mics are not the best. The AT2020 or even the 2035 have done me well when recording in my room. And definitely look into acoustic treatment for your room.

What kind of rap music are you making?

I wouldn't buy a USB mic because I have an audio interface and often record with more than one mic. I realize a USB mic may be all you need for lots of music stuff like hip hop, but it is still my impression that the best use case is not music production, but rather twitch streaming and podcasts and the like.

If you get an audio interface and an XLR mic of some sort, it'll be a little more streamlined for you once you wanna record from an extra mic or two.

AT2020 is a very solid microphone, i would recommend it

It's not very original, I know, but:

The legendary SM57 is a mic that's good for pretty much everything. I use it to record vocals, guitars (acoustic and electric), bass, piano, and even drums (though then I team up with my friend, so that there's 3 SM57s)

Really, if you're buying your first mic, it doesn't matter much. Any mic can record anything, and it's up to you (and your skill) how good of a use you'll make of it.
Sure, some are better for x and some are better for y, but if you try, then any mic will do the job.

Focus more on the material, less on the equipment.

It doesn't really matter if your guitar is a Fender that you payed 2K for, or a Vision you payed a hundred bucks for. What's really important is your playing.

The same goes for mics, as long as you don't buy a 30 dollar one on eBay.

I love Warm Audio mics. Very affordable and have a great response rate. Very comparable to my Nuemann mics.

I second the warm audio. I have used them in a studio in Arizona and weren't bad

it depends then whether you want warm audio or not at the beginning of your mixing process though.

It's better to buy something fairly neutral at the beginning, so that you can work your way from there.

Hmm.. warm audio is a brand. If I remember correctly, they make a very popular copy of the Neumann U87, among other things. I don't think all their mics are warm sounding.

They have some popular preamps too.

Since you're starting out, I'd suggest a good dynamic microphone as your room probably isn't treated or properly isolated. You can also use that on live performances and guarantee at least your voice will sound good.
