Two things might be the cause: Either you didn't properly mark an area before trying to use an effect that requires a marked area, or else you tried to manipulate an .mp3 file without having the required .dll file that you have to download separately. I think the second problem is only relevant when trying to export to .mp3. so it's probably the first thing that causes the problem.

I just did it successfully with a track from my computer! Pretty easy, but like I said, it depends on the song. Even if doing it right, it might not work.

EDIT: Being paused is also a no-no :P
