Default Opinions...Loudest unwanted noise in the world!

Hi folks, looking for some opinions...

Ok, so we're playing at a mega posh hotel in the centre of Edinburgh last night, £50 a ticket black tie job, gig is going really well, we'd been playing about an hour and a half, then suddenly the loudest most horrible noise ever comes through the pa......holy ****, it was horrendous!

It wasn't feedback, it's quite hard to describe, it was like a continuous electrical krrrrrrrrr noise (if that makes sense!).

I put the master faders right down and slowly put them back up....still there. Back down again, waited a minute, treid again and was gone.
The volume of the noise was incredible, the punters **** themselves!

So, checked all the connections, all fine, carried on.

End of the gig, ipod in, playing a mix whilst we broke the gear down, happened again.

This time, switched the mixer & power amp off for a minute, back on, had stopped.

So, does anyone have any ideas what on earth this was???
Obviously we're going to have to replace gear, but is it the mixer or the power amp or something else? Replacing them all would be expensive, so would be hand to isolate which one it would be.
I know that's mega hard to answer without seeing / having gear checked over, but wondered if someone hear had experienced this before and could speak to what it might be?

Here's our rig:

2 x Peavey Pro 15
2 x Peavey Pro Subs
t.amp TA2400 MK-X
Behringer 2222fx mixer

Thanks guys :-)
